GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
BE - SEMESTER–VIII (NEW) - EXAMINATION – SUMMER 2018
Subject Code: 2180507 Date: 30/04/2018
Subject Name: Transport Phenomena
Time: 10:30 AM to 01:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Explain the general equation that governs any transport process 03
(b) Discuss the significance of studying Transport Phenomena. 04
(c) State and explain Newton’s Law of viscosity and discuss how it is 07
analogous with Fourier’s Law of heat conduction and Fick’s Law of
binary diffusion.

Q.2 (a) Define and explain binary Diffusivity. 03

(b) Compare and contrast convective and molecular mass fluxes. 04
(c) Derive general shell energy balance equation and discuss the common 07
types of boundary conditions involved in its solution.
OR
(c) An electric wire of circular cross section with radius R and electrical 07
conductivity ke, conducts an electric current with current density I.
During the transmission of electric current some electrical energy is
converted into heat. Derive an equation for the temperature distribution
from centre to periphery of the wire.

Q.3 (a) Compare and contrast the molecular and convective mechanisms for 03
momentum transport.
(b) An oil has a kinematic viscosity of 2x10-4 m2/s and a density of 0.8x103 04
kg/m3. If we want to have a falling film of oil of thickness 2.5 mm on a
vertical wall, what should be the mass rate of flow of the oil per unit
width of the film?
(c) Derive equation of molar flux for steady state diffusion of one gaseous 07
component through stagnant non diffusing second component.
OR
Q.3 (a) Explain temperature and pressure dependency of diffusivity. 03
(b) The diffusivity of the gas pair O2-CCl4 is being determined by observing 04
the steady-state evaporation of carbon tetrachloride into a tube
containing oxygen, The difference of the distance between the CCl4,
liquid level and the top of the tube (z2-z1) is 17.1 cm. The total pressure
on the system is 755 mm Hg, and the temperature is 0°C. The vapor
pressure of CCl4 at that temperature is 33 mm Hg. The cross-sectional
area of the diffusion tube is 0.82 cm2. It is found that the molar rate of
evaporation of CCl4 is 2.14x10-5 mol/hr. What is the diffusivity of the
gas pair O2-CCl4?
(c) Derive equation for velocity profile and mass flow rate for flow of a 07
falling film over a flat plate.
Q.4 (a) Find the temperature distribution for heat conduction due to the viscous 07
heat dissipation for flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid between
two concentric cylinders.
(b) Show that for equimolar counter diffusion DAB = DBA. 07
OR
Q.4 (a) Define mass and molar average velocities. 03
(b) Discuss the significance of momentum, thermal and mass diffusivities. 04
(c) For the fixed-bed axial flow reactor shown in figure, find the steady state 07
axial temperature distribution. The fluid is flowing axially in plug flow
with superficial velocity v0.

The reactants enter at z = - and leave at z = +. The reaction zone is

from z = 0 to z = L.

Q.5 (a) An incompressible Newtonian fluid is flowing in the z direction between 07

two vertically placed parallel walls of length L and width W under the
influence of a vertical pressure gradient. One of the walls is moving in
z direction with a velocity vo. Obtain the velocity distributions for the
flow system. Consider the flow to be laminar.
(b) Derive velocity distribution and pressure drop for flow of an 07
incompressible Newtonian fluid through annular space between two
concentric long cylindrical pipes.
OR
Q.5 (a) Derive velocity distribution and pressure drop for flow of an 07
incompressible Newtonian fluid through a long cylindrical pipe.
(b) Derive equation for finding viscosity using a Couette viscometer. 07
