The document contains excerpts from several poems in Italian about love, loss, and longing. It explores themes of being separated from a beloved and finding joy and purpose only when reunited. Nature and memory are sources of both comfort and pain without the presence of a lover.

O del mio amato ben
Oh, lost enchantment of my dearly beloved!
Far from my eyes is he who was, to me, glory and pride! Now through the empty rooms I always seek him and call him with a heart full of hopes? But I seek in vain, I call in vain! And the weeping is so dear to me, that with weeping alone I nourish my heart.
It seems to me, without him, sad everywhere.
The day seems like night to me; the fire seems cold to me. If, however, I sometimes hope to give myself to another cure, one thought alone torments me: But without him, what shall I do? To me, life seems a vain thing without my beloved.
Sin tu amor(without your love)
Beloved, o love of my life
Come, come to me Without your love where is the joy of living Seeing no more your dear eyes alight with gladness No more the smile, on your lips, of love’s sweet madness What is my reason for living
With you not mine
Where is the joy of living Now that another sees your eyes alight with gladness Not that another on your lips tastes love’s sweet madness What is my reason for living But if you were mine, if your eyes were turned to me, dear If it were to me that your dear lips murmured i love you
Ah, what joy were mine
All my life i would be, dear By your side, whispering softly i adore you If it were to me that your dear lips murmured i love you Ah, what joy were mine All my life i would be, dear, by your side Whispering softly, i adore you
Sound the trumpet
Sound the trumpet till around
You make the listening shores rebound. On the sprightly oboy play. All the instruments of joy That skilful numbers can employ To celebrate the glory of this day.
When I have sung my songs to you
When I have sung my songs to you I’ll sing no more
T’would be a sacrilege to sing at another door We’ve worked so hard to hold our dreams just you and I I could not share them all again I’d rather die With just the thought that I had loved so well so true That I could never sing again That I could never never sing again except to you! Au bord de l'eau (At the water's edge)
To sit together beside the passing stream
and watch it pass; if a cloud glides by in the sky, together to watch it glide; if a thatched house sends up smoke on the horizon, to watch it smoke; if a flower spreads fragrance nearby, to take on its fragrance;
under the willow where the water murmurs,
to listen to it murmuring; for the time that this dream endures, not to feel its duration; but, having no deep passion except adoration for one another, without concern for the world's quarrels, to ignore them; and alone together, in the face of all wearying things, unwearyingly, to feel love (unlike all things that pass away) not passing away!
Cradle-song at the bed-side of a sick child(Schlaf, mein Knäblein, schlaf)
Sleep, little child, sleep!
As you sleep, you are so good.
Mother wants for all the trouble,
The you you so late, as early, Are you laughing now, or sulk, Why, that thou shalt sleep. Sleep, my little boy, sleep, As you sleep, so you're good!
Outside red in the midday sun
There glows one of the finest cherries. When you awaken, we shall go, And my finger will pluck it for you.
Sleep, little child, sleep!
As you sleep, you are so good.
Ever sweeter the sun ripens
Your cherry, for your delight; Sleep, then little child, lightly covered, Until you awake with an appetite for it.
Sleep, little child, sleep!
As you sleep, you are so good.
A single secret tear (Una furtiva lagrima)
A single secret tear
from her eye did spring: as if she envied all the youths that laughingly passed her by. What more searching need I do? What more searching need I do? She loves me! Yes, she loves me, I see it. I see it. For just an instant the beating of her beautiful heart I could feel! As if my sighs were hers, and her sighs were mine! The beating, the beating of her heart I could feel, to merge my sighs with hers... Heavens! Yes, I could die! I could ask for nothing more, nothing more. Oh, heavens! Yes, I could, I could die! I could ask for nothing more, nothing more. Yes, I could die! Yes, I could die of love.
E lucevan le stelle (The stars were shimmering)
The stars seemed to shimmer
The sweet scents of the garden, The creaking gate seemed to whisper, And a footstep skimmed over the sand. Then she came in, so fragrant, And fell into my arms! Oh! sweet kisses, oh, languorous caresses, While I, trembling, was searching For her features, concealed by her mantle. My dream of love faded away, for good! Everything's gone now. I'm dying hopeless, desperate! And never before have I loved life like this! And never before have I loved life like this!
