 SO4004 - Mathematical methods for Economists

1. Module Code SO4004 2. Module Title Mathematical methods for Economists

3. Module Level 4 4. Module Credit 20 CC   10 ECTS
5. Delivery Site(s) Parkgate Road Campus, KDU College (PJ)
6. Available to / Restrictions None
7. Expected Student Learning Activity and Contact Hours including Key Information Set (KIS) data

A total of 200 hours of student learning time of which there will be 48 hours of contact time across the 24
weeks of delivery managed flexibly to include a wide variety of learning, teaching and delivery methods
appropriate to the learning outcomes.
Scheduled hours Placement Hours Independent Guided study

8. Attendance Guidance

It is expected that all students attend all sessions, unless there are clear mitigating circumstances which indicate
otherwise. Much of the work undertaken in class is formative and contributes to the achievement of the learning
outcomes.
9. Module Content

This module represents the core undergraduate Mathematics unit, where students will receive an introduction to
basic and more advanced mathematical techniques to support learning on their Economics Programme. Part of
the module will be devoted to learning basic principles of Mathematics from scratch. The other part will
provide more advanced mathematical techniques that students will need throughout the Programme. This
module will help students gaining problem-solving skills and knowledge in various areas of Mathematics and
will support their learning in most of the core units of the Economics Programme (e.g., SO4003 Introductory
Micro and Macroeconomics, SO4002 Skills for Economics, SO5001 Intermediate Micro and Macroeconomics,
and SO5005 Introductory Econometrics).

The module content will include:

 review of basic algebra;

 indices (powers and fractional powers);
 functions;
 logarithms;
 differential calculus;
 limit evaluation;
 optimization;
 integral calculus.

10. Aims

The aims of the module are to:

 Enable students to acquire appropriate knowledge in Mathematics to support their learning in levels 4,5
and 6.
 Enable students to develop problem-solving skills.
 Enable students to apply fundamental mathematical concepts to solve real world problems in designed
scenarios.

11. Methods of Learning and Teaching and Formative Assessment

Contact time will be used creatively to enable the students to achieve the learning outcomes. The emphasis will
be on formative activities and assessments as part of the development towards summative assessments. There
will be support in place before, during and after the summative assessments. The teaching team will use
Sharepoint to support the learning process, working with LIS to ensure appropriate learning resources
are accessible on the Moodle pages. There will be support in place for students who may find some of the
mathematical concepts challenging, through online activity, workbooks, peer group working and one to one
tutorial sessions. Students are encouraged to develop independent study skills.
12. Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

1. Acquire and develop appropriate mathematical skills for moving to levels 5, 6.

2. Select and use appropriate mathematical techniques to evaluate a given economic problem.
3. Articulate and use key ideas associated with first year Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.
13. Assessment and Reassessment Components and Weighting
