1
Class: SE Mechanical 2018-19 Sem IV, GHRIEM Jalgaon
Subject: Applied Thermodynamics (AT)
Title: Unit I - Fuels and Combustion
Teacher Name: Prof. Bhushan C. Behede

Guidelines: Solve any 5 questions which should contain at least 3 Numerical Problems

1. A certain fuel oil has the composition C10H22 If this fuel is burned with 150% theoretical
air, what is the composition of the products of combustion?
2. Liquid propane is burned with dry air. A volumetric analysis of the products of combustion
yields the following volume percent composition on a dry basis: 8.6% CO2, 0.6% CO, 7.2%
O2, and 83.6% N2. Determine the percent of theoretical air used in this combustion process.
3. In a combustion process with decane, C10H22, and air, the dry product mole fractions are
83.61% N2, 4.91% O2, 10.56% CO2, and 0.92% CO. Find the equivalence ratio and the
percent theoretical air of the reactants.
4. Explain the following terms in brief
a. Theoretical air.
b. Stoichiometric Air Fuel Ratio.
c. Enthalpy of Formation.
d. Gibbs free energy.
5. Liquid pentane is burned with dry air, and the products are measured on a dry basis as
10.1% CO2, 0.2% CO, 5.9% O2, and remainder N2. Find the enthalpy of formation for the
fuel in kJ/kg.
6. Calculate the air–fuel ratio on molal and mass basis for the combustion of Propane with
200% theoretical Air.
7. Determine the reaction equation, molal analysis of the combustion products, and mass
air/fuel ratio for the combustion of kerosene, C10H22, with 187% excess air.
8. An unknown hydrocarbon material is burned in air for chemical analysis. An Orsat test
indicates that the (dry) exhaust gas contains no CO or O2 but consists of only 14.9% CO
and 85.1% N. Determine:
a. The fuel model Hydrocarbon
b. The composition of the fuel on a percent mass basis.
c. The molar and mass air/fuel ratios used in the combustion process.
d. The dew point temperature if the combustion products are at 0.101 MPa.
9. Explain the concept of Adiabatic Flame Temperature in brief
10. An Orsat analysis of the (dry) products of combustion of a gas emanating from the bowels
of a creature of immense hypocrisy produces the following composition: 1.00% CO and
79.8% N2: Determine:
a. The chemical formula of fuel (CnHm) and name of the gas.
b. The composition of the fuel on a percent molar basis.
c. The percent excess air used in the combustion process.
11. Determine the specific molar Gibbs function of formation at 25.0°C and 0.100 MPa for the
reaction C+O2→ CO2.
12. Explain the Orsat Apparatus for Flue gas analysis in brief.
13. Calculate ∆U0 in kJ/kg for the combustion of benzene (C6H6) vapour at 25°C given that
∆H0 = – 3169100 kJ/mole and the H2O is in the vapour phase.
14. The lower heating value of propane at constant pressure and 25°C is 2042055 kJ/kg mole.
Find the higher heating value at constant pressure and at constant volume.
15. Orsat analysis of the products of combustion of hydrocarbon fuel of unknown composition
is as follows:
Carbon dioxide (CO2) = 9% Carbon monoxide (CO) = 0.6% Oxygen (O2) = 7.3% Nitrogen
(N2) = 83.1%. Determine the following:
a. Air-fuel ratio
b. Per cent theoretical air required for combustion.
