CHECALC Sample Problems

This document contains 3 cases involving calculations based on fuel analysis, stack gas analysis, or partial stack gas analysis. Case 1 involves calculating Orsat analysis and air/fuel ratios based on pure ethane combustion. Case 2 involves determining fuel formula, excess air, and air/fuel ratios based on stack gas analysis of hydrocarbon combustion. Case 3 involves calculating excess air and completing the exhaust gas analysis based on a motor benzole fuel mixture.

Case 1: Calculation Based on Fuel Analysis

1. Pure ethane is burned completely in 20% excess air. Air is supplied at 25C, 740 torrs and is
substantially dry. Calculate:
a. Orsat analysis of the products of combustion
b. Kg dry air supplied/kg of fuel gas
c. Cubic meters of air/kg of fuel gas
2. An automobile engine is supplied with a gasoline that is found by analysis to contain
88% carbon and 12% hydrogen. It is operated at normal barometer. Calculate the
a. orsat analysis of the stack gas,
b. pounds of dry air / pounds of fuel,
c. volume of this air at 60°F and the
d. volume of the stack gas at 1000°F
granting combustion with 90% theoretical dry air under conditions such that the
oxygen will be completely eliminated and the molar ratio of CO to H2 in the
combustion gases will be 2:1.
Case 2: Calculation Based on Stack Gas Analysis
1. A pure saturated hydrocarbon is burned with excess air. Orsat analysis of the products of
combustion shows 9.08% CO2, 1.63% CO, 5.28%O2 and no free H2. Calculate:
a. The fomula of the hydrocarbon
b. % excess air
c. kg dry dry air/kg of hydrocarbon
2. A mixture of a saturated hydrocarbon and N2 is burned in excess air supplied at 25C, 740
torrs with 90% relative humidity. An orsat analysis of the stack gas shows 7.6% CO2, 2.28%
CO, 1.14% H2, 6.03% O2 and 82.95% N2 with a dew point of 53.46C. The stack gases leave
at 300C, 765 mmHg with a volume ratio of 2.049 m3 stack gas /m3 of wet air. Establish your
basis as 1000 m3 of wet air. Calculate:
a. % excess air
b. formula of the hydrocarbon
c. %volume analysis of the hydrocarbon fuel
C)
Case 3: Calculation Based on Partial Stack Gas Analysis
Motor benzole is a mixture of 3 lower aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene and xylene in
proportions of 75%, 15% and 10%. A motor is run using benzole and gives an exhaust gas which
analyzes 10.7% CO2, and 1.07% CO. Calculate:
a. % excess air
b. complete analysis of exhaust gas
