Art Asia

A New Arena for Asian Art

September 23, 2010

The only Asian contemporary art fair in the U.S., Art Asia has proved to be quite a
success here. With 95 percent of last year’s galleries reporting strong sales, and the
attraction of numerous leading institutions, museums, advisory groups, international
collectors, press, and art enthusiasts, Art Asia is becoming a prime contributor to the
Miami art fair scene.
Some of the fair’s participating exhibitors have included RCM Gallery, Galerie
Kashya Hildebrand, Grotto Fine Art, Keumsan Gallery, Kips Gallery, the Ullens Cen-
ter for Contemporary Art, and Da Xiang Art Space. Sundaram Tagore Gallery has also
not only participated, but played an exceptionally significant role in their special pre-
sentation of SIGNS last year. The exhibit attracted a considerable crowd, featuring
works within the contemporary Arab art scene that incorporated and explored the role
of traditional Islamic calligraphy and symbols.
For last year’s fair, Art Asia began a new curatorial platform with curator, Leeza
Ahmady. The resulting exhibition, Truly Truthful, presented 20 internationally recog-
nized artists whose works contest categorical presentations of truth and reality in the
world. Coming from 15 different countries, Albania, Cambodia, China, Egypt, France,
India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, and the
U.S., the artists wanted to “create a platform that reflects the diversity of artists’ back-
grounds and practices, dispelling the notion that contemporary art from Asia is nar-
rowly focused and comes from a single region,” said Ahmady, curator and director of
the Asian Contemporary Art Week at the Asia Society.
For Art Asia’a film series this year, Yi Zhou’s The Ear is shown, featuring Pharrell
Williams with music by Ennio Morricone, and costumes designed by Rick Owens and
BBC Ice Cream.

Artists of the Month

NATHALIE DUJMOVIC
Global Arts Projects Presents
The International Artists at Home and Abroad Exhibition Series
Broadway Gallery NYC
January 17th-31st, 2011
Reception: Thursday, January 20th, 2011 6:00–8:00pm

The Artists at Home and Abroad exhibition series is a representation of both emerging
and established artists on an international scale. Exploring everything from the inter-
section of abstraction and figuration to the significance of high and low art, each par-
ticipant creates an entirely different perspective within the cultural sphere of the art
world.
Inspired by salon-style hanging, most commonly attributed to the Salon de Paris held
during the 18th and 19th centuries, the show intends to provide patrons of the arts
with an inviting, intimate viewing experience to initiate a dialogue between artists,
their work and the viewer. Following a trend of previous exhibitions at Broadway
Gallery NYC, this show pays tribute to the format of a salon hanging and celebrates
the tradition that continues to render expositions of a large numbers of artists and an
even larger numbers of works.
The Artists at Home and Abroad exhibition will be on display at Broadway Gallery
NYC, in conjunction with several Internet projects, and a print catalog. The exhibit
will offer writers and viewers the chance to submit essays and comments on the
nature and significance of biennials, fairs and public exposure for new and emerging
artists. Featuring many artists working with both new and old mediums, the Artists at
Home and Abroad exhibition offers a platform for artists, curators, gallerists as well
as writers to voice their ideas on the contemporary art world.
Utilizing the maximum floor-to-ceiling gallery space activates the wall with artworks
in various media by artists, each of whom offer a unique perspective to the show.
Established, innovative, and emerging artists have contributed a body of nearly one
hundred fifty works of art reflecting an impressive range of theories, generations,
styles and distinctive visual expression.
In order to synthesize numerous languages spoken through various artistic disciplines,
the two long walls in parallel are carefully installed to create dialogue in the spatial
order. Artists at Home and Abroad allows the viewer access to some of the past and
current pivotal artistic ideas while introducing newer talent, to generate fresh creative
energy through unexpected juxtapositions.

“I wanted to express my gratitude to you for all what you have done to promote my
art. The publication was very impressive, professional and of a high quality. I
congratulate you for a job well done. Artists wherever they are need this kind of
promotion so they can share their artwork with the public. Your Gallery and web site
are the best promotional tools I ever encountered during the many years that I have
been painting. Thank you for everything you are doing.” I select all my works via
instinct and intuition rather than any intellectual reasoning
Nathalie' s included in "Betwixt & Between" at Artspace, New Haven, CT, November
11, 2010-January 22, 2011.
Exuberantly colored in bright blues, oranges, pinks, light purples, Nahalie’s work
gives the immediate feeling of a children’s book. Through the setting’s abstract forms
she composes a fantasy-like playground for the characters in her narratives. Her
figures range in form, from a shape analogous ,perhaps an anticipated alien?
Regardless of their representative associations, Nathalie’s characters’ relationships
and interactions definitely add to the complex plot that exists within each of her
pieces. Maybe more visually intriguing than the figures within each piece are the
intricate and involved landscape fixtures that serve as a sort of cornucopia of habitat
and activity for her characters. Seemingly ever-growing, they flower outward,
increasing exponentially in size with each outer layer. They pull the viewer’s gaze in
towards their receding center. Often appearing curious and questionable, these forms
take on a different feeling from the lively color and zest of the rest of the piece. At
times they even translate an erotic quality with the central hole surrounding by the
many folds and layers, . Nathalie’s work is animated, playful, and seemingly child-
like, however, with further observation it begins to take on an ironic transformation

Constructing the Perceiver - Nathalie Dujmovic: Experimental Works

Kristina Asvarn’s serene paintings create an innovative world within a world. Each of
these “worlds” have led to the artist to develop a reputation for poetic epic works that
display both delicacy and fragility, revealing a deep respect for something
fundamental, some primal, indigenous sense of shape and color. Her paintings are
playful, spirited, freeform and deceptively complex. There’s not a single corner, hard
edged, geometric line to be found in her composition, instead the shapes are as fluid
as the submerged sounds that fuel her imagination. Using acrylic paint to explore
color, luminosity, movement, and relationships, Asvarn captures the energy of the
life—from the people she meets to the places she travels. With raw energy and
provocation Asvarn’s work explores painting’s potential. Her art occupies a domain
between a romantic and a conceptual art form in which a deep, psychological
experience is formed. In her works broad brushstrokes and symbols of affection, in
acidic and delicate colors, dash across an epic surface inviting the viewer inside,
allowing them the freedom to let feelings be their guide. Her paintings and sketches
straddle the line between representation and abstraction. The artist’s strength lies
within this fluid movement between genres and categories. Caught between
description and dreamlike states, the observed and the imagined, Asvarn’s work
transforms the natural world into poetic visions and fantasy, while still utilizing
symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasize the “freedom” of art
from traditional culture.
Utilizing every inch of the canvas her artistic vision is not hampered by the edges of
the canvas limits. This is a method Asvarn come to be known for during her many
years of artistic discourse. Born in Stockholm, Sweden Asvarn’s works are
reminiscent of a dream voyage to another place, deeply personal, evoking her own
subconsciousness, while revealing universal truths about the journey and celebration
of life.
