Our strengths are in Customized Designing

To ensure the selection of candidates with the right basic skill sets, Corporate look at designing
/ redesigning its Aptitude Test.

Since the roles varies from function to function and organization to organization, it is important
that the test reflect the specific aptitudes needed for each role variation. It is thus envisaged,
that QC will design a “battery” of aptitude test and recommend the combinations to be used
for.

Test Essentials

Should provide a one-stop screening solution and cover skills aptitudes needed for the
role within the Finance/ HR/ Marketing/ Commercial/ R&D/ Production functions
Should be easy to understand and administer.

Type of Aptitude Tests: Concept

Aptitude tools can be used to measure one or more of the following aptitudes / abilities:

1. Numerical ability - ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and do numerical reasoning
2. Language ability - ability to communicate in good, accurate grammatical English
3. Verbal reasoning - ability to reason logically in verbal terms.
4. Manual dexterity – ability to use a particular body part to perform a manual activity with
high skill and accuracy
5. Logical reasoning - ability to comprehend concepts or ideas and to see the relationships
between them
6. Abstract reasoning - ability to reason with visual configurations.
7. Perceptual reasoning – ability to apply perceptual analogies and make diagrammatic
interpretations
8. Spatial awareness - ability to visualise and think in three dimensions
9. Mechanical ability - ability to understand underlying principles behind machines
Standardized Vs. Customized Test

There are a variety of aptitude testing tools available in the market, which test different abilities
and have standardized norms, as mentioned above. Then what is the advantage of getting a
customized tool made?

1. Tests available in the market may or may not test all the abilities that need to be
assessed in a candidate. E.g. a test may only measure numerical aptitude.
2. Standardized tests with established reliability, validity and norms may involve high
expenditure and may not be feasible for mass hiring.
3. The test may not have Indian norms.
4. The test items may not be suitable for the candidate profile being hired.

Test Design Procedure

Phase Action Steps

Pre- Understand the candidate profile (Age, education, experience, role /
Work responsibilities)*

Phase 1 Prepare Preliminary Draft of the test

• Decide on item and response format for EACH sub test
• Generate 75 items per sub test
• Prepare instructions for taking test
Phase 2 First Pilot & Analysis
• Pilot the test on atleast 50-70 candidates
• Conduct Item analysis – Calculate item difficulty and item validity,
• Come up with a list of final test items
Phase 3 Second Pilot & Analysis
• Prepare and Pilot the Second Draft of the test (with the relevant items) on
atleast 40-60 candidates
• Calculate test reliability, validity, norms, cut-off & duration
(Test cut-off point will be determined by the scores obtained by the norm group,
desired performance level and when the test will be used in the selection process-
initial screening or final selection)
Phase 4 Construct the Final Draft of the test
