Reflection

The topic I chose to write about this semester is conformity. This topic sparked an

interest in me because I was curious to understand why people conform and behave in certain

ways, even when they do not believe in what they are conforming to. Because conformity is

manifested so negatively in the novel that we read at the beginning of the semester, “To Kill A

Mockingbird”, I was led to believe that conformity is a massive disadvantage to society. Prior to

my research and post-reading this novel, I thought conformity did not have any positives, but

after finding many sources using the Scout database, provided by UA’s library, it is now my

understanding that that is not the case. Most of the sources I found on Scout pertain to the

psychology of conformity, which helped me better understand human behavior and our desire to

live up to the standards society has created for us. I did, however, experience difficulty in finding

useful sources due to the fact that conformity is such a broad topic. Narrowing down my topic by

using the advanced search option provided on Scout is what led me to find my best sources.

Rather than just searching the word “conformity”, I made sure to include words like

“psychology” and other key terms that would help narrow down my topic as there are almost

three million sources relating to the topic of conformity.

Throughout the writing process, I found that for each unit being required to complete a

rough draft is helpful in making revisions for the final draft. These rough drafts are important in

participating in the activity that I found to be the most beneficial, peer reviews. I enjoyed
receiving feedback from multiple people instead of only having self-edits to revise. The feedback

that I received from my classmates is what brought me to write some of my best work. I also

believe that the conferences offered made an impact on my writing as it is always helpful to

receive feedback from an instructor. In my exploratory essay, I proposed ideas that I could

research to better my understanding of this topic: “I could research the psychological factors of

human behavior to provide a better understanding as to why people conform” and claimed that I

would “research this topic further by looking for different ways people conform every day and

researching human behavior” (Romero). I did indeed complete this research and it is evident in

my annotated bibliography. After finding sources pertaining to this research, I discovered that

instead of focusing on the negatives, I should be focusing on the positives of conformity in my

researched essay. My sources made me realize that conformity is crucial to maintain a well

-functioning society, which led me to conclude in my researched essay that “having both

conformity and individuality exist is what makes society operate the most efficiently” and not

just one or the other (Romero).

It is my discovery that for a writer to get the most out of and enjoy writing is to write

about a topic that greatly interests them. Conformity being a topic that I was actually interested

in made the writing process much easier and more enjoyable. Not only did having an interesting

topic motivate me, but also the sense of accomplishment I knew I would feel afterward was

motivating. Although this process did not change my bad habit of procrastinating, I now realize

that it is important for writers to dedicate more time to their writing in order to complete their

best work. However, I did develop positive habits as a result of this process too, like being able

to find the appropriate sources, make better revisions, and more. I usually do not enjoy writing

very much, but like I said before, having a topic that interests me made this process more
enjoyable. Due to the fact that we were required to really analyze our topics and write in great

depth, I now believe I am a much stronger writer than before and will be in the future as well.
