Brainstorm
I’m doing this exercise alone. I have some family in Canada, so the person I’m going to
contact is Canadian. I’m going to contact a girl called Kira. Kira is the same age as me and
lives in Wingham, Ontario. In my email, I would like to talk/ask about the following subjects:
spare time, school life and culture and religion.

First contact
Hello Kira,

I’m Joyce (from the Netherlands), you might already know me. I live in the province of
Noord-Brabant (the South) with my parents and little brother (Lars). I’m 13 years old and my
hobby is dancing (hip-hop).

So, what’s the reason I’m contacting you? Your mother might have already told you why I’m
contacting you, but in case she didn’t I’ll still tell you why I’m contacting you. I’m doing an
assignment for school, within this assignment we are contacting people from other countries
and ask them questions about religion, school life, spare time, etc. In this way, we learn
more about the cultural aspects and improve our language skills. This is very important
because I’m doing bilingual education (it means we get most of the lessons in English). In this
e-mail, I’ll ask you some questions and give you some information about the Netherlands. I
hope you can help me with answering those questions.

The Netherlands is a really beautiful and nice country. However, the weather is very
different each day. We have sunny days but also very rainy and cold days. But for the next
weeks/months I don’t have to cycle to school due to corona; the schools are closed due. We
can go outside, but we need to keep a distance of 1,5 meter and we may not be together
with too many people. How is your school at this moment in Canada? How are you dealing
with the coronavirus?

Because of the coronavirus, I have more spare time left. When I’m done with school, I
practise my dance (we learned in the dance lessons) or I play with my brother in the garden.
What do you like/need to do in your spare time?

When I’m bored (because I don’t know what to do in my spare time) I like to eat sweet food
like cookies or candy. In the Netherlands we have really tasty food, we have: stroopwafels,
poffertjes, hutspot, drop. You should definitely try them. What is typical Canadian food?

Some food in the Netherlands is related to a tradition, for example; peppernuts

(pepernoten) are related to Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is a celebration on the 5th of December.
On this day it’s Sinterklaas (= an old man) his birthday, he gives that evening every child
presents. Are there special traditions in Canada?

The food and traditions are (important) parts of the culture in the Netherlands. Is religion
important within your culture? And what is most important to you within your culture?
These were all the questions I wanted to ask you. I thank you for your time. I hope you will
respond (soon) to give (some) answers on my questions. If you have any questions you
would like to ask me, you can always ask them via email (or via something else). Also, I hope
this will help us get more in contact (and keep in touch).

Kind regards,
Joyce

Hi Joyce, I'm so happy that you chose to write your letter to me! I live in the province
Ontario, with my parents and little brother named Gavin. I am 13 years old and my hobby is
also dancing!

Yes, my mother did tell me about how you were going to email me. When she told me she
also showed me some pictures of us together when we got to see each other last. It was a
very long time ago. I think it is so cool how you are doing most of your school learning in
English, and I would love to help you by answering some questions for your project.

In Ontario we also have different weather most days. About a month ago there was so much
snow it went up to my waist! Now just yesterday it was 20 degrees celsius. Here in Canada
we also have no school due to coronavirus. We have to stay 6feet away from everyone, and
we can’t have more than 5 people at a place at once.

I also have a lot of spare time right now. We haven't gotten too much school work yet but I
know we will soon. Some things that I will do is practice my dance routines and my tumbling
that I have learned. I also like to draw and colour pictures. I have tried some food from the
Netherlands. I have tried poffertjes, stroopwafels and kroepoek. They all taste so good!
Some yummy foods that we have in Canada are poutine, maple syrup and maltesers. There
is also a very popular restaurant that Canada is known for which is TimHortons. Also, here in
Canada hockey Is a very popular sport known by many. My brother Gavin plays it.

In Canada on December 25th we have a big man named Santa Clause come to everyone’s
houses while we are asleep on a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. He delivers all of the
children gifts. Everyone also leaves out a glass of milk and cookies for him to eat when he
comes.

Thank you for writing to me, and helping me get to know you a bit better. I hope my email
helps you with your project and helps us stay in touch!

Sincerly,
Kira
Hello Kira,

It’s nice to hear from you. Thanks for your email and information. I’m sorry it took a little
longer before I responded on your email. Last week and this week I have a (May) holiday. My
holiday is of course little more boring than usual (due to the coronavirus), normally we
would go on holiday abroad, do some nice activities and meet friends and family. However, I
am pleased no one of my family is ill due to the coronavirus. How are you (and your family)
doing?

Even though it is a difficult time, I’m trying to make the best of it and have lots of fun.
Yesterday it was ‘Royal day’ (NL: Koningsdag) in the Netherlands. I don’t know if you know
what it’s about or if you have heard about it. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the
king, we all wear orange clothes and have a big party together (on the streets and cafés).
Because of the coronavirus, I celebrated this day with my family at home, my brother
thought about some fun old Dutch games. We did those games in our garden and had a lot
of fun.

So, I had a nice idea. Maybe we can switch phone numbers, so we can text each other via
WhatsApp (or another app). Through this, we can contact easier. What do you think about
this idea? Let me know if you think this is a good idea and if the answer is yes, which app you
would like to use (to communicate). Then I will give you my phone number.

Stay save!

Kind regards,
Joyce
