“I Love You Always Forever” Essay

“Everywhere I will be with you, everything I will do for you,” is a main lyric sung

originally by Donna Lewis in 1996, and then later by Betty Who in 2016. Each of their

music videos to the song “I Love You Always Forever” are simple and focused on the

subject of romance. The modern version produced by Betty appeals to more viewers as

it is inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community. "I Love You Always Forever" is an upbeat love

song when sung by both Donna Lewis and Betty Who, however the slight differences in

music video production create visual efforts that may appeal to a wider variety of

people. The modernized version by Betty Who adds a sensual, yet mature, aesthetic to

read the true meaning behind the song.

Donna Lewis wrote and performed the song originally in the mid-90’s. She wrote

the song to proclaim her feelings toward the person that she loves. The song was very

popular all over the world, with Donna being a British artist. In her music video for this

song, she is the only person who appears on screen. She sings the lyrics in front of a

simplistic background, playing the piano at times and strutting around the screen. It is

pretty obvious that this video was created in the 90’s based on Donna’s sense of style

and cinematography. Overall, the original music video to this song really displays

Donna’s emotions behind the lyrics she wrote.

In 2016, Betty Who created a cover music video and track to “I Love You Always

Forever.” Betty Who is an Australian pop singer, who is also a very popular modern day

artist. In Betty’s music video to the song, she follows the lead of Donna’s version by

making it simple, really drawing you into the lyrics that she is singing. However, Betty is

not the only person to appear on screen in her version. Betty has several other women

and men together in the video, really creating an idea that follows the saying, “love is

love.” Betty Who’s music video creates a more sensual and intimate aesthetic related to

the feelings behind the song.

The Donna Lewis original version of the song may appeal more to women than

men, in the sense that it is a catchy love song. The visual effects and style of Donna will

probably also appeal to those who are ages 20-30, especially in the 90’s when the song

and music video were produced. Since Donna is a British pop singer, the song may

focus towards those from Europe, however the song was wildly popular all over the

world, and I believe it appealed to a large audience.

In Betty Who’s music video, as mentioned above, there are multiple other men

and women involved other than the Australian singer herself. In this sense, the 2016

version music video will probably appeal to men and women roughly the same ages of

20-30 years old. This version appears more mature and intimate. Since Betty is from

Australia, some may say the audience is expected to be from her place of residence.

However, similar to the Donna Lewis version, this song grew with popularity

internationally.

Since these videos to the same song have the same internal message, the

rhetorical appeal to each video would be “pathos.” The song itself, even without

watching the two videos, is an emotional proclaim to love and feelings. “I love you

always forever, near and far, closer together,” is an example of the pathos that are

present within the lyrics to the song. The intimacy and sensual feeling that is brought by

Betty Who’s video is another example of pathos that appeals to the viewer.

“I Love You Always Forever” is a catchy, pop song about telling the person you

love how you feel. Performed originally by Donna Lewis in 1996 and then again by Betty

Who in 2016, the song itself along with each music video uses pathos to appeal

emotionally to the audience. Betty Who revamped the original tune and the modern

music video creates a more mature and sultry feeling than the simplistic, pop version

performed by Donna Lewis. The 20-year age gap between the two music videos gave

Betty the chance to really modernize the sound and exemplify the feelings brought to

life by this song. Both music videos to “I Love You Always Forever” have the same main

idea to get across, discussing one’s feelings romantically for another person. Each song

became very popular and can be considered a classic love song.
