Area #1: Procedures/ Structures/ Routines
This section of successful classroom management is important in starting and creating a
successful classroom. This area allows for teachers to create a beginning routine at the start of
class. This will ensure that at the start of the school year that everyone knows what routines
and directions to follow. The students will need to know when they will need to be quiet, if
there are any attention signals that the teacher will be using, what the transitions look like
including dismissal and lining up, and the non-verbal cues.
I believe that the procedures and structures put into place at the beginning of the
school year creates what the rest of the school year looks like. If the teacher is relaxed with the
procedures and routines, then the students will be doing whatever they want to do whenever
they want to do it. If the teacher starts out the school year by implementing the rules and
procedures for the classroom then later on in the school year things will be going a lot
smoother. I have notices in classrooms that I have student taught in which teachers took the
time at the beginning of the school year to teach the students the rules procedures, structures,
and routines. I believe that this area of classroom management is a key part to creating a
successful classroom. In my own personal classroom, I will make sure to start out the school
year by enforcing procedures, structures, and routines. I will practice with the students each
day the transitions that we will do for the rest of the school year. We will practice moving
around the classroom quickly and quietly as well as lining up in an orderly manner quickly. I will
practice my routines with the students each day and work on getting faster and quieter as time
goes on. Soon the students will know what is expected from them and will know the structure
of the classroom without the teacher telling them.
Area #2: Engagement & Participation
Engagement and participation in the classroom if taught correctly can involve the
learners to further their thinking. In the classroom, learners can participate and be engaged in
their learning in multiple ways. Learners can be involved by collaborating with their peers or in
groups, moving around the classroom, and by asking questions.
My philosophy for the area of engagement and participation in classroom management
is that it is very important. The method in which the teacher teaches to the students is
important. If the teacher has the students working in small groups rather than in a whole group,
then the students are learning form one another. Students get bored of listening to the teacher
talk in the front of the classroom all the time. It is good to mix it up once in a while by getting
the students engaged in different ways. Teachers can keep the students engaged in the learning
if they are continuously changing the way they teach. Teachers should mix their classroom up.
In my future classroom, I will be sure to switch up the way I teach to keep the students engaged
in my teaching. I have learned through my student teaching that teaching the same way all of
the time gets old and is fun for nobody. I will switch things up in my own classroom by having
my students working at stations, in groups, individually, and whole class. I will incorporate fun
things into my teaching such as music, movement, and hands on activities. I want my students
to learn in the classroom through inquiry. I plan to have a variety of ways to learn to offer to my
students as they are learning.
Area #3: Rapport/ Connection
Building a connection in the classroom is such an important thing. Students are able to
learn in the classroom if they feel safe and know that they can trust their teacher. Students
should enter a classroom and know that they have a teacher that is approachable and
enjoyable to be around. While teaching, those teachers that are enthusiastic and full of energy
and excitement are always more enjoyable to be around.
The rapport and connection area of classroom management is exciting to me. This is the
part of teaching that allows me to build stronger connections and relationships with the
students. Building relationships with students is an important key to letting them learn.
Relationships with students can look different depending on the student. Each student needs
different types of attention and it is my job to give each student what they need. If I show my
students that I respect and appreciate them then they will feel safe to learn in the classroom
setting. In my own classroom, I plan to use this area of rapport and connection by getting to
know my students. At the beginning of the school year I will have my students fill out a
questionnaire asking them about their interests. This will allow me to know what each of my
students are interested in, so I know how to go about the school year. I will plan lessons based
on their interests to make the learning more fun and exciting.

Area #4: Behavior Intervention/ Consequences
The classroom management area of behavior intervention and consequences is
important when it comes to knowing what to do with the students. Teachers who use a variety
of redirections, are reasonable, give consequences as choices, and are consistent will have a
better handle over their students. Students need to know that their teacher is holding them
accountable for their actions. If the teacher is not holding the student accountable, then the
student will act out and their actions will get out of control.
I believe that teachers need to be firm and follow through with consequences. The
students know who those teachers are that let the rules and consequences slip by and will take
advantage of that. A strategy that I plan to use and implement into my future classroom is to
create a list of rules and expectations with the students at the beginning of the school year. By
creating the list of rules together with the students we both will know that the expectations are
fair. After creating the rules, I will have the students sign the expectations like a contract.
Throughout the school year if there are any students who are not following the rules, then I can
go back to the rules and tell them that they agreed with it at the beginning of the year and
signed their name. Doing this will allow for me to stay consistent with the rules throughout the
year.
