Analysis:
According to Ward (2018), Advertising is the attempt to influence the buying behavior of
customers or clients with a persuasive selling message about products and/or services. In
business, the goal of advertising is to attract new customers by defining the target market and
reaching out to them with an effective ad campaign. As normal “TV-watchers”, some people
may not notice the importance of TV commercials. Maybe only a few percent of the people
know that these commercials actually have many purposes. Of course, the purpose of promoting
their products comes on top but the other purposes are: wide reach with commercial
advertisement, visual medium dynamics, cable television opportunities, commercial advertising
and credibility, and commercial advertising helps with branding (LaMarco, 2018). Moreover,
another article according to LaMarco (2018) states that “Depending on the length of the ad, who
produces the ad, the markets in which it airs – as well as how many times it has been aired – all
determine how much television advertising costs.”
While doing this activity, I have also come to understand the importance of advertising
and how it works. I was already quite familiar with how advertising works on TV, but I
understood it more as we were given this task. From what I have recorded, there are also some
brands that really stood out as they aired so much on TV. Some of them are Downy, Ariel, Tide,
Bear Brand, Jollibee, and McDonald’s. It also engrossed me to know that even the choice of
timeslot when the commercial will be aired has a reason and purpose. The programs that I have
observed are in the “Primetime” slot, which means that these programs are the most-watched
dramas on TV. It is also because there are more people who are able to watch TV at this time of
the day as they only come home from work during these hours. I have observed that the most-
watched drama gets the most number of ads. Moreover, I noticed that the brands I previously
mentioned allot a huge portion of their funds to advertising on television. I guess the reason why
other programs come to a sudden end is because they already lack sponsors. It is, indeed, a
thrilling and fresh experience for me to do this type of task. I think that this became a way of
letting us understand more what it’s like in terms of creating and promoting commercials and so
it gave us more knowledge, as well.
