ASSIGNMENT - 5

QUESTION - 1
A beam of 6m. long is fixed at A & simply supported at B. it carries a UDL of
50KN/m in the middle third of the beam. draw the SFD & BMD of the given
beam.
SOLUTION:
 Support at B is removed
=>Ra=100KN
 The deflection at B=moment of M/EI diagram about B
= (1/2*200*2*16/3+100*2*5+1/3*100*2*7/2)
*1/EI
=2300/EI
 Rb is considered.
Deflection at B=(6*Rb*6/2*2*6/3)/EI
 Both the deflections are same.
By equating 2 & 3 we get
Rb=31.94KN
=>Ra=100-31.94
=68.06KN
Ma=31.94*6-100*3=-108.36KN.m
Mb=0
Mc=31.94*4-100=27.76KNm
Md=31.94*2=63.88KNm
 With the computed data SFD & BMD of given beam is drawn.
QUESTION - 2
A Propped cantilever AB of span 4m. hinged at A & fixed at B is loaded with
a UDL of 10KN/m throughout the span. Find the support reactions, draw
SFD BMD.
SOLUTION:
 The support at A is removed.
Rb=40KN
 The deflection at A =the moment of M/EI diagram about A
=1/3*4*80*3*1/EI
=320/EI
 Ra is considered.
The deflection at A=1/2*4*4Ra*2.67*1/EI
=534Ra/25EI
 Both deflections are same.
By equating 2 & 3
Ra=15KN
Rb=25KN
MB=15*4-40*2=-20KNm
MC=15*2-20=10KNm
 With the computed data SFD BMD of the given beam is drawn.
QUESTION - 3
A cantilever beam has a rigid support 10mm below free end. Analysis this
beam if two-point loads of 40KN & 60KN are acting at a distance of 2m &
4m respectively from free end. EI=150000KNm 2
SOLUTION:
The rigid support is 10mm below free end means the beam is sinking.
EI*0.01=-1500
=>A1X1+A2X2=-1500
=>(1/2*6RB*6*4) -(1/2*120*2) -(1/2*200*2*10/3) -(2*120*5) =-1500
=>72RB=-1500+8000/3
=>RB=16.20KN
=>RA=83.80KN
MA=16.20*6-60*4-40*2=-222.8KNm
MC=16.20*4-60*2=-55.2KNm
MD=16.20*2=32.4KNm
The SFD BMD Are drawn from the computed data.

wire CB. Determine the force developed in the wire if an UDL of 20KN/m
acts at a distance 3m from fixed end. Assume EI=5000KNm 2 for beam &
E=200KN/m2 for wire.
SOLUTION:
LET
Deflection due to external load =X
Deflection due to developed force =X1
Deflection due to propped reaction=X2
X=X1+X2
X=1/3*3*90/EI*3.25
=292.5/EI
=0.0585KNm ----------------------------------------------------------------------1
X1=PL/AE A=Pi/4*0.003 2=7.068*10-6 m2
=1.414*10-3P ----------------------------------------------------------------------2
X2=PL3/3EI
=4.266*10-3P --------------------------------------------------------------------3
From the computed data
=>0.0585=5.68*10-3P
=>P=10.29KN
QUESTION - 5
The free end B of a cantilever beam AB of span 3m rests over another free
end of cantilever beam BC of span 2m. if 60KN load acts on beam AB at
2m from fixed end. Find the reaction at fixed ends A & C. assume
EIAB=EIBC/2
SOLUTION:
1.Considering only AB not resting on BC
Deflection= X= [1/2*120*2*(2/3*2+1)] *1/EI
=280/EI
2.considering Rb, now the deflection be X2
X2=(1/2*3Rb*3*2) *1/EI
3.Now the downward force on BC to kept it in position
X1=(1/2*2Rb*2/3*2*2)/(EI/2)
=16Rb/3EI
X=X1+X2
=>Rb=19.54KN
MA=19.54*3-60*2=-61.38KN
RC=19.54KN
RA=40.46KN
MC=19.54*2=39.08KN

=>32Rb-8Mb=64/3
 Equation on CG
32Rb*16/3-8Mb*4=64/3*7
=>512/4Rb-32Mb=448/3
 By solving 1 & 2
Rb=1.5KN
