DESIGN OF SLAB 0.

025
I. Data:
1 Clear Span : 4000 mm 4.000 m
2 Depth of slab 250 mm 0.250 m
3 Clear Cover : 30 mm 0.030 m
4 Dia of Rein. 16 mm 0.016 m (Max. dia is 1/8 th of slab thk.)
5 Width of bearing : 500 mm 0.500 m
6 Unit wt of RCC 2.5
7 Unit wt. Of CC 2.4
8 Grade of Concrete M20

II. Design Constants:

1 Permissible Stress in Concete (c) : 70 kg/sqm
2 Permissible stress in Steel (t): 1900 Kg/sqm
3 Modular ratio (m) : 13.33
4
k= 1
1 + t
mc

= 1
1 + 1900 = 0.329
13.33 x 70

j= 1- k/3
= 1 - 0.329 / 3 = 0.890

Q= 0.5 c j k
= 0.5 x 70 x 0.8902 x 0.329 = 10.262

III. Design of RCC slab for operating plat form

1. Effective depth d = 250 - 30 - 8
= 212 mm or 0.212 m
2. Effective Span :
1 Clear Span +Effective depth = 4.00 + 0.212 = 4.212 m
2 Clear Span + C/C bearings = 4.00 + 0.50 = 4.50 m

Effective span is least of the above.

Effecive Span = 4.212 m

3. Assume Live Load = 0.75 t/sqm

4. Loads :
I).Self Wt. Of slab = 0.25 x 2.5 = 0.625 t /sqm
ii) Load from shuttering = = 0.500

SLAB Page 1
iii) Live load = 0.750 "
Total = 1.875 "
5 Bending Moment:
As per IS : 456-2000
Max. Span Moment in the end span at the centre of span =
= wl2 /8 = 1.875 x 4.212 x 4.212 = 4.16 tm
8
6 Check for Section : =
Max. Moment 4.158 tm

Eff. Depth required = M

Qb

= 4.158 x 105 = 20.1 cm

10.26 x 100

against the provided depth = 21.2 cm

Hence Ok

7 Area of Steel at centre of span = M

tjd

= 4.158 x 105
1900 x 0.89 x 21.2

= 11.596 Sq.cm

Min. reinforcement as per IS:3370 Part II

0.160%
0.240%

100 Thk. 450 Thk

For 250 Thk.

% steel = 0.16% + 0.08% x ( 450 - 250 )

350
= 0.206 %

SLAB Page 2
Min. Area of steel required = 0.206 x 100 x 25
100
= 5.143 sqcm
Hence provide reinforcement = 11.596 sqcm

Provide 16 dia bars at

Area of each bar = 3.14 x 16 x 16 / 4
= 201 sqmm
= 2.010 Sqcm

Spacing required = 100 x 2.010 = 17.3 cm C/C

11.596

Max. spacing a) 300 mm

b) 3 times eff.depth = 3 x 212 = 636 mm
Least of the above
Hence provide 16 dia bars at 150 mm C/C

Ast provided is = 1000 x 2.0096 = 13.4 Sqcm

150
8 Distribution Reinforcement:
Ast = 0.12% of cross sectional Area
= 0.12 x 100 x 25 = 3 Sqcm
100
Provide 10 dia bars
Area of each bar = 3.14 x 10 x 10 / 4
= 78.5 sqmm
= 0.785 Sqcm

Spacing required = 100 x 0.785 = 26.17 cm C/C

3

Hence provide 10 dia bars at 250 c/c

9 Check for Shear:

w = 1.875 t/sqm
Max. Shear Force V = 1.875 x 4 = 3.75 t
2

Max. Shear Stress (q) = V

b d
= 3.75 x 1000 = 1.769 kg/sqcm
100 x 21.2

SLAB Page 3
Allowable Max, Shear stress as per B-5.2.3.1 Table 24 of IS 456-2000
for slabs 'q' value should not exceed half the value in Table.24
= 0.5 x 18 = 9 Kg/sqcm
Hence O.K

% of steel = 100 As / bd
= 100 x 13.40 = 0.632
100 21.2
Permissble Shear Stress as per Table 23 of IS:456-2000 P-84

100 As/bd for M20

0.50 0.30
0.75 0.35
0.25 0.05
for 0.632 %
= 0.3 + 0.05 ( 0.632 - 0.50 )
0.25
= 0.326 N/sq mm
= 3.264 Kg/Sqcm
For solid slabs as per B-5.2.1.1
' k' value for depth of slab 250 mm = 1.1
Hence, permissible shear stress is = 1.1 x 3.264
= 3.59 kg / sqcm
Shear reinforcements Vs = 3.75 - 7.611 = -3.86 t

Shear taken by bentup bars = 2.010 x 1900 Sin 45 x 2.22

= 6001 Kgs
= 6.001 t > -3.86 t
Hence O K

SLAB Page 4
10 Bond Stress :

Sum of perimeters (∑O)= 1000 x 3.14 x 16

150
= 334.9 mm or 33.49 cm
Tbd = V = 3.75 x 1000 = 5.28 kg/sqcm
∑O d 33.49 x 21.2

Permissible bond stress as per Table 21 of IS: 456 & B-2.1.2

= 1.6 x 1.25 x 0.8
= 1.60 N/sqmm
= 16 kg/sqcm

Hence, O.K
