Lesson one

Speaking

At the Restaurant
 Practice the way of making conversation between a waiter/waitress and a customer at
the restaurant.
Key words:
 Waiter: a man who serves food or drinks to people in a restaurant.
 Waitress: a woman who serves food or drinks to people in a restaurant.
 Customer: - Someone who buys goods or service from a business.
 Menu: a list of the foods or drinks that may be ordered at a restaurant.
 Bill: a statement of charges for food or drink used or served.
 Charges; the price demanded or required for something.

There are different ways of making conversation or dialogue during asking for something or
to use in the restaurant. These are;-

1. Waiter: May I take your order?


Customer: Yes, I’d like “ Doro wat”.
Waiter: And what would you like to drink?
Customer: I’d like a cup of coffee, please.
Waiter: Here you are
Customer: Thank you.

2. Waiter: Hello, how can I help you?


Customer: I’d like to have lunch.
Waiter: Great. What would you like to eat/
Customer: I’d like Spaghetti. Is it good?
Waiter: Yes, it’s very good. Would you like something to drink?
Customer: Just water, please.
Waiter: Is there anything else I can do for you?
Customer: I can’t read this menu. How much is the spaghetti?
Waiter; It’s 15 birr.
Customer: Thank you.
Grammar

Simple present Tense

It used to talk about the present time.(things which always happen).


Example:
 The sun gives light.
 The sun rises in the east.
 The sun sets in the west.

Present tense is also used to express repeated actions.


Example:

 Jemal always goes to mosque.


 Jemila is a grade 4 student.
 She likes tea with bread.
 He watches a carton film every night.

He/She/It
 He like football. (wrong)
 He likes football.(correct)
 She speak English.(wrong)
 She speaks English.(correct)
 It walk slowly. (wrong)
 It walks slowly.(correct)

Note: He/She/ It are singular subjects, so they always take singular verbs.

I/We/You/They
I plays football.(wrong)
I play football.(correct)
We watches a film.(wrong)
We watch a film.(correct)
You eats bananas. (wrong)
You eat bananas.(correct)
They reads a book. (wrong)
They read a book. (correct)
Is/am/are
is: goes with he/she/it

o Genzebe is a strong athlete.


o She is a strong athlete.
o Cat is a domestic animal.
o It is a domestic animal.

are: go with you/ We /They

 You are my best friend.


 We are best friends.
 They are best friends.

am: is used only with ‘I’

I am happy.
I amn’t sad.

Does/ Does not


Does: is used in positive or question sentence.

Does not( doesn’t) : is used in negative sentence.

Example:

 Does a cat drink water?


 A cat doesn’t drink water.
 Does he speak Chinese?
 He doesn’t speak Chinese.
Do/Don’t

Do: is used with positive question.

Is used with you/We/they/I

Example;

 Do you watch Television?


 You don’t watch Television.
 Do we smoke cigarette?
 We don’t smoke cigarette.
 Do I know her name?
 I don’t know her name.
 Do they have a car?
 They don’t have a car.
