1. PDU stands for "Protocol Data Unit." A PDU is a specific block of information transferred over
a network. It is often used in reference to the OSI model, since it describes the different types of
data that are transferred from each layer.

‘PDU’ as used in the activity

ICMP stands for Internet Control Message Protocol, which is an internet layer protocol used by
network devices to diagnose network communication issues. ICMP is mainly used to determine
whether or not data is reaching its intended destination in a timely manner.

The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a data link layer protocol standardized by the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1D. STP determines which machine should
receive – and therefore respond to – each incoming signal.

Application of ‘STP’ in the activity

2. Network response and data flow in Procedure 4.

In the activity, the user was tasked to send a ‘PDU’ from PC0 to PC1. The PDU represents
the data sent from pc to pc. Since the only physical line/mode of transport in the network was that
of the Switch, therefore the PDU sent by PC0 goes to it. After which, the message sent is delivered
by the switch to PC1. The PC1 then after receiving the message sends back a reply, informing PC0
that the message has been received.
What happens in the said network is that, the switch keeps a record of the MAC addresses
of all devices connected to it. In the case of procedure 4, PC0 requests for PDU to be sent to PC1.
Once the switch identifies the specific MAC address of PC1 (192.168.1.11), the switch then sends
the data to it.

3. Network response and data flow in Procedure 4.

The task was to send a ‘PDU’ from PC0 to PC2. However, both computer nodes were not
able to establish a connection due ‘connection failure.’ What happened during the activity was that
PC0 lies in network 192.168.1 whereas PC2 lies in 192.168.2 network, which is why both
computers were not able to establish a definite connection.

Observation/Synthesis/Generalization
In the activity, the user was tasked to establish a network connection using a star topology.
The switch was used to create a network with three computer nodes. The switch is an intelligent
device which stores the MAC addresses of all the devices connected to it. This is the same reason
why all three computer nodes were connected to it. In procedure 4, when the user was tasked to
send a message from PC0 to PC1 through simulation, the connection was a success. This is because
both nodes lie in the same network, specifically: 192.168.1 whereas, in procedure 6, the network
was not able to establish a connection due to difference in network: 192.168.1 for PC0 and
192.168.2 for PC2.

Thus, in conclusion, in order to properly establish a connection, both nodes should lie in
the same network. One probable solution for procedure 6 to have a successful connection would
be to add a router device, that allows for a connection to establish between 192.168.1(PC0)
network and an outside network: 192.168.2(PC2).
