Unit 7 Lesson B Things to remember

3 Travel suggestions Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

Don't forget to pack a bathing suit. The beaches are wonderful.

It's a good idea to buy a phrase book so you can ask for things.
You could change money at the airport, so you don't need to find a bank.
You shouldn't use the subway late at night. Taxis are much safer.
Why don't you buy a really big hat to protect your face from the sun?
You should wear sunscreen all the time. The sun is really strong.

That’s a great idea.

4 Let’s see a movie. Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

Let's visit my grandmother this weekend.
Yeah. I'd love to see her. I guess I'm free on Saturday.

Hmmm, I guess we could. But she sometimes goes away on weekends.
Why don't we go camping in the mountains?
That sounds good. I guess we could go in the summer. How long do you want to go

Do you want to meet my parents?
Sure. I'd love to meet them. I guess I really should, too.

Well, I'd like to, but I guess I feel nervous about meeting them.

Unit 7 Lesson D Interesting places

2 An email from Ireland Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

Dear Sam,
I'm having a fabulous time here in Bolivia. I'm staying in Uyuni. It's an amazing place.
There's so much to see. Today we visited the Hotel de Sal Playa - it's made of salt! We had
lunch there. The food was great, and not salty at all!
Tomorrow we're going to Sucre, one of the two capitals of Bolivia. We're staying there for
a few days and then we finish our trip in La Paz.
See you next week!
Lara

No, not at all. How you do like it? With or without milk?
Do you mind if we watch the soccer game tonight?
No, not at all. What time does it start? Who's playing?
I feel hot. Could I get a glass of water?
Sure. Do you want ice in it?
Can I borrow your phone? I need to call my sister.
Sure. Go ahead. Do you want to go into another room?
Sorry, I can't hear you. Would you mind turning down the music a little?
No problem. Is that better?
Can we listen to some music?
OK. What kind of music do you like? Do you like hip-hop?

Unit 8 Lesson D Home habits

2 A typical Sunday Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

On Sundays, I never get up as soon as I wake up! I love to sleep late so

it's usually noon before I finally get up. My Sunday routine is often the
same. First, I watch the news on TV while I make coffee. Next, I take a
quick shower and then I check my messages and drink my coffee before I
leave the house. I always meet a friend for lunch at a local restaurant,
and I usually walk there. During lunch, we chat about our week. Then,
after lunch if it's a nice day, we go for a walk in the park. If it's cold or
raining, we often go to see a movie. I really enjoy Sundays, especially
Sunday afternoons.

Or

important. Then, after dinner if it's a nice day, we go for a ride around the city. We really

Unit 9 Lesson A When things go wrong . . .

4 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

When I was eating dinner a couple of nights ago, I spilled spaghetti sauce on my
favorite T-shirt.
Last weekend, my friend called me when I was making a cake, and I burned it!
I was doing my homework one night when my friend called and said she had free
tickets to a concert.
Last week, I was going to class and I missed my bus. I had to wait 45 minutes.
Last weekend, I was walking around the mall, when a woman came up to interview me
for the local TV news.
Yesterday, I was talking to a friend and he told me that he's getting married.
Unit 9 Lesson C That’s hilarious.
3 And then what happened? Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

I was walking to work one morning, and I thought I saw my old friend from
middle school across the street. So I ran after him and called his name. Anyway,
he turned around and it wasn't my friend at all.
Oh, that's funny. I bet the guy thought you were crazy.
I was taking a taxi once, and I was in a hurry. I wanted to pay with my credit
card, but I couldn't find my card. I didn't have any cash either. The driver was a
nice guy. He took my address, and called by later to pick up the money.
Really? That was kind of him. I bet you were really embarrassed.
Last year, none of my friends called to wish me Happy Birthday. I thought,
"Maybe they just forgot." Well, when I got home, I opened the door and it was all
dark. Then suddenly the lights went on. My friends were shouting "Surprise!"
and giving me presents.
Wow! That's really nice. I bet you were surprised.
My brother was driving my dad's car in a bad storm one night. It was difficult to
see, so he stopped under a tree until the rain stopped. A big branch fell from the
tree and hit the top of the car. My brother was OK, but the car wasn't.
You're kidding! That's lucky! I bet he was scared.

Unit 9 Lesson D Happy endings

2 About you Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

Last weekend, I went to a concert with some of my friends. It took a couple of hours to
drive to the concert. It was pretty far. While we were waiting in line to get in, we started
talking to some people. I thought one of the girls looked familiar. But I wasn’t sure. But
when she said she was from the same town, I asked her “Which school do you go to?” It
was the same school as my brother, and I realized she was one of my brother’s friends. I
couldn’t believe it! It’s amazing that you can meet someone in a crowd of 15,000 people
like that. It’s a small world!
Unit 10 Lesson A Keeping in touch
3 I don’t think so! Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

I think tablets are harder to use than smartphones.

Really? I think tablets are easier to use than smartphones because the screens are
usually bigger.
Cameras take better photos than the cameras in cell phones.
I'm not so sure. I think cameras in cell phones take better photos than cameras. The
camera in my cell phone is better than my regular camera.
I think it's more important to listen to the radio than watch TV.
Really? I think it's less important to listen to the radio than watch TV. On TV you
can see photos of news events. With the radio you can only hear about things.
It's easier to understand a voice-mail message in English than a written note.
I don't think so! I think it's harder to understand a voice-mail message in English
than a written note.
I don't think I agree with that. I think it's harder to understand a voice-mail message
in English than a written note. It's easier to read something than to listen, especially
in English.
It's worse to have no phone than to have no laptop.
Do you think so? I think it's worse to have no laptop because you can do most
things with a laptop, but not a phone.
I think text messages are more popular than phone calls.
Actually I think phone calls are more popular than text messages. Most of my
friends call me these days.

Unit 10 Lesson C What were you saying?

3 Hold on a second. Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

You: Hello?
Friend: Hi, It's me! Hey, I was just calling to tell you, this weekend there's . . .
You: (1) Oh, can just you hold on a second? I just want to turn down the music. OK. Sorry.
So, what were you saying?

Friend: I was just calling to tell you about my party this weekend.
You: Great. So what's the special . . . (2) Oh, just a minute. I've got another call. Can you
call me back?

Friend: Hey.
You: Hi. Sorry about that. So, (3) what were we talking about?

Friend: My party – this weekend.
You: Right. (4) Excuse me just a minute. There's someone at the door.

You: Sorry. So are you having a birthday party?
Friend: No. It's just for fun. I'm going to invite . . .
You: (5) Wait  a minute. You're breaking up.

You: Oh, that's better. (6) You were just saying?
Friend: Oh, I was saying, I'm going to invite everyone from class. So can you come?
You: Oh, yeah I'd love to. Thanks.

Unit 10 Lesson D Texting

2 Pros and cons Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

It seems like almost everyone today is part of some kind of social

network. Social networking sites make it easier to talk to friends, find old
friends, and make new ones. Some social networking sites can even help
you to find a new job. However, there can be problems with using social
networking sites. For example, it is much easier for criminals to find out
personal information about you. It’s also easier for people to hack in to
your computer and cause problems with your software. While social
networking is fun, I think we need to be more careful about what
information we share and who we share it with.
Unit 11 Lesson A Family traits
4 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

How tall are you? Are you taller or shorter than your parents?

How many people have dark hair in your family? Does anyone
have curly hair?
We all have dark hair, and my brother's got curly dark hair.
What color eyes do people in your family have?
Everyone in my family has brown eyes, except my dad.

Unit 11 Lesson B Features

1 What is it? Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.

Do you think men should have pierced ears?

I think it's OK. Men wear other kinds of jewelry so it's OK if they wear earrings,
too.
or
No, I don't. I don't think jewelry looks good on most men.
Do you know anyone with freckles?
My friend Peter has bright red hair and he's got lots of freckles on his face and arms.
or
No I don't. I can't think of anyone with freckles.
Did you ever wear braces?
Yes, I did. I wore them for two years, and I hated them.
or
No, I didn't. I didn't need them because my teeth are pretty straight.
Which is better, being muscular or being thin? Why?
I think being muscular is better because muscular people are stronger than thin
people.
or
I think being thin is better because very muscular people don't look natural to me.
How many of your friends wear their hair in a ponytail? Does anyone wear braids
or cornrows?
Most of my friends have really long hair. Some of them often wear it in a ponytail,
and some of them also wear braids. I don't know anyone with cornrows.

or
No. None of them has spiked hair. None of them is bald, either.

Unit 11 Lesson D Changing fashions

2 What’s “in”? Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

A couple of decades ago big purses were fashionable and everyone had one. Then suddenly
they were no longer “in," and small purses became the “in” thing. Designer purses were -
and still are popular for women with money to spend. In the 2010s purses became trendy
for men, and pop stars and sports personalities started to carry them.
Purse styles change over time, but one thing is for sure, you never see women without one!
They are always in style.

Unit 12 Lesson B Jobs

3 About you Activity B
Use your own ideas. Here are some examples.
I'm sure my family will be really happy when I graduate.
I may study to be a lawyer if I get good grades.
I hope I'll be able to travel around Europe before I start work as a police officer.
I might not get a vacation before the summer ends. I'm too busy at work!
I guess I won't get a promotion if I don't work hard.
I'll probably earn a lot of money if I become a consultant.
I'll be disappointed if I can't be an interior designer.
One day I might be able to be a journalist if I work hard.
I probably won't study anything else when I finish my master's degree.
I'll be really pleased when I can retire!

Could you help me clean the kitchen?
OK. I'll come and do the dishes in a minute.
Unit 12 Lesson D In the future . . .
2 Life in the future Activity C
Use your own ideas. Here is an example.

The ideal city of the future will be a pleasant and healthy place to live and work. First, it
will be easy for everyone to find work. There will be more hi-tech companies with
interesting jobs, especially for young people. Second, there will be better public
transportation and more bicycle paths so there will be fewer cars in the city. If there are
fewer cars, there will be less air pollution so people will have fewer health problems. Next,
it will have an excellent education system with good high schools, colleges, and
universities. College fees will not be expensive, so everyone will be able to take full-time
or part-time courses. Finally, there will be more outdoor markets for local farmers, so
people will be able to buy fresh organic fruits and vegetables. If all cities are able to make
improvements like these, people will be happier and healthier.
