Digital Citizenship

Slide 1

Title: Digital Citizenship

Slide 2

Just like regular citizenship, digital citizenship is the norms and rules we follow to act

appropriately when using technology. Current students were most likely born as a digital citizen.

They were probably given a tablet or smartphone at some point when they were very young to

entertain themselves. Each student has grown up using this technology and, therefore, must learn

how to be a good digital citizen.

Slide 3

Digital citizenship has nine elements as listed below:

 Digital Access is about the equitable distribution of technology and online resources.

 Digital Communication and Collaboration is the electronic exchange of information. All

users need to define how they will share their thoughts so that others understand the

message.

 Digital Etiquette refers to electronic standards of conduct or procedures and has to do

with the process of thinking about others when using digital devices.

 Digital Health and Welfare refers to the physical and psychological well-being in a

digital world. Technology provides many opportunities and enjoyment, but knowing how

to segment use with the needs of ourselves and others is key to a healthy, balanced life.
 Digital Law refers to the electronic responsibility for actions and deeds and has to do

with the creation of rules and policy that address issues related to the online world.

 Digital Rights and Responsibility are those requirements and freedoms extended to

everyone in a digital world.

 Digital Security and Privacy is the electronic precautions to guarantee safety. Viruses,

worms and other bots can be passed along from one system to another just like an illness.

 Digital Commerce is the electronic buying of goods and focuses on tools and safeguards

to assist buying, selling, banking, using money in any way in the digital space.

Slide 4

Understanding Digital Citizenship requires use of seven key concepts including:

 Empathy

 How the Internet works

 Understanding user data

 Practicing digital literacy

 Acknowledging the digital divide

 Practicing digital wellness

 Securing digital devices

Slide 5

Digital citizenship education is about empowerment of children to participate in the Digital

Society. They need to have the knowledge, skills and understanding required for users. They

must ensure that those who are not digital natives are not marginalized. The learners should be

able to work, live and share in digital environments in a positive way.

Slide 6

As an effective digital citizen it is imperative to:

 Use technology to make your community better.

 Engage respectfully online with people who have different beliefs than you.

 Use technology to make your voice heard by public leaders and to shape public policy.

 Determine the validity of online sources of information.
