Case Study: Chris Sizemore: Dissociative Personality

Background History:
Chris Costner Sizemore (born Chris Costner April 4, 1927) is a woman who, in the 1950s, was diagnosed
with Multiple Personality Disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder
Christine claims her multiple personalities date back to her childhood in South Carolina. There were
several traumatic events, such as seeing the body of a man who had been cut in half after a sawmill
accident. Christine also saw a drunk man being dragged from an irrigation ditch and believed it was a
dead body; and when her mother cut her arm accidentally and blood poured everywhere. Too young to
deal directly with what she had seen, she developed the first in a line of alternative personalities.

Christine as a child also felt unloved by her mother and jealous when her twin sisters were born. Her
alter (other personalities) would do all the forbidden things that Christine was inhibited about - stealing
apples, being cruel to her sisters, failing school tests and wandering away from home for long periods.
Her parents noticed her "strange little habits". Later on in life Christine maintained that she loved her
mother and sisters, but her alter expressed the hatred she had repressed deep inside

Recommended Treatment Plan for Dissociative Identity Disorder

While there's no "cure" for dissociative identity disorder, long-term treatment is very successful, if the
patient stays committed. Effective treatment includes talk therapy or psychotherapy, medications,
hypnotherapy, and adjunctive therapies such as art or movement therapy

Based on the video clip and the background history of Chris Sizemore, complete the table shown below
using the four goals of psychology.

Description Explanation Prediction Control

The attending psychologist or
counselor need to predict
when the other personalities
of Chris Sizemore will manifest
and how it will affect her from
her day-to-day living.
