1.5 AT THE LEVEL OF METHOD

The analysis of a method is based on the characteristic of it.

1.5.1 The objective of a Method

We paid attention to the SYLLABUS to be followed and the LEARNING OBJECTIVES

to be achieved. Depending on the goals of language learning decision may include:

o Focus on language skills: reading, writing, listening or speaking.

o Focus on knowledge about language: phonetics, grammar, etc…
o Focus on specific situational abilities: ESP, General English, Translations, etc.
o Focus on general competence: Competence often refers to the ideal
speaker/hearer, that is an idealized but not a real person who would have a
complete knowledge of the whole language.
o Include aspects of the culture and/or literature of the target language
community: L2. English as a second language.

So, you have to know WHAT you want to teach, and what aspects of the target
language you are going to focus on, depending on the group of students of course:

 Only reading?
 Just the oral aspect of the language? Phonetics?
 Is it General English? To focus on a specific situation: “At the Restaurant”.
 Are you going to teach grammar? Are you going to teach how to interact in a
restaurant?
 Remember that culture is part of a language, so we cannot teach a language
and not to pay attention to its culture. You may be explicit and consider, for
example: American food, British traditions.

1.5.2 The role of Language and Grammar

The method incorporates a syllabus. So we have:

 Syllabus = Selection and organization of Language Content.

 Learning Tasks and Teaching activities = technique and activities show the
chosen method (they are the characteristics of the method)

That is why the definition of Syllabus is:

A syllabus (/ˈsɪləbəs/; plural syllabuses or syllabi) is a document that

communicates information about a specific course and defines expectations and
responsibilities. It is descriptive (unlike the prescriptive or specific curriculum). A
syllabus may be set out by an exam board or prepared by the tutor who supervises or
controls the course.

1.5.3 The role of Learners and Teachers

Teacher role: depends not so much on the method, but on the expectation of
the learner, the institution and society.
Learner role: passive empty vessels to be filled from the “fountain of wisdom”.
Or active determiners of their own learning who needs just guidance and support from
their teachers.

1.5.4 The Role of Instructional Material

This is a fundamental aspect of a method when a teacher has to organize a class.

Instructional material may be.

 A textbook: the cornerstone of the method.

 Some teachers produce their own material, according to the current needs of
the students.
 It is unnecessary to have material. e.g. in the Counseling Language Learning,
the learners themselves produce the material.

Of course, nowadays we have to think of Information and Communication

Technology (ICTs) in education.

Notice:
At the end of this course, you will be able to analyze the different methods and
approaches considering the various aspects that characterize them to complete this grid
to have a summary as a basic guide to plan your lessons.
