European Digital Art and Science Network

The Creative Europe Call aims to collide the minds of science
with those coming from the digital arts in order to achieve a
serious, common perception of opposed disciplines.
2 scientific institutions representing Europe’s peak in scientific research and 8
European cultural and scientific places representing Europe’s artistic pendent are
establishing together a new model of how science and art are able to accompany
each other.
Creating new dimensions of a prototypical collaboration and production of sci-
ence and art is the major aim of the European Digital Art and Science Network.
Engineering science and art generated at CERN (Switzerland), ESO (Chile) and Ars
Electronica Future Lab (Austria) will act as the source of inspiration.
Two places of science that both draw a bow between micro- and macro cosmos
aiming to answer one of those questions human kind has been looking for since
it´s very early days.
What is the universe made of? How did it start?
Physicists at CERN are seeking for answers, using some of the world’s most pow-
erful particle accelerators while in Chile at ESO, the European Southern Observato-
ry, astronomers and astro-physicists are using the world’s most advanced ground-
based astronomical telescopes.
The Ars Electronica Future Lab with its transdisciplinary expertise considers its
everyday practice of connecting a variety of disciplines as a fundamental, import-
ant innovation source. Interaction designers, media artists, software and hardware
developers as well as social scientists and cultural theorists have been working
together based upon the concept of “shared creativity” and generate an ideal
breeding ground for research, development and evaluation of technological,
artistic innovations.
Eight European, cultural and scientific partners with an experienced and funda-
mental focus on the intersection between art and science should form a prototyp-
ical network. There, the power of artistic reflection meets key topics of global
scientific research on eye level attended by a profound educative program.

• A Jury including the project partners is selecting the submitted Project Papers
• Featuring European artists in a (max) 3 month residency program taking place in a 1st part at the
scientific place (CERN or ESO) and in a 2nd part at the artistic research place (Ars Electronica Future Lab)
• The creation of a constantly growing, sustainable European network of Scientific and Cultural
Institutions, Scientists and Artists
• Development of innovation presentation forms to meet the needs of projects at the interface
between art and science
• Deepening and expanding the developed results with associated best practice projects
• Creating and presenting an exhibition with the results at Ars Electronica Festival,
as well as at the cultural partners and optional at the scientific places

February 2015 Jurymeeting: jury consisting of representatives of all cultural partners as well as scientific
mentors – nomination of 3-5 artists, ranked in order of preference
Evaluation criteria: aesthetics, originality, a compelling conception, innovation, the
technique and quality of the presentation, interest in the ideas of science
Spring 2015 Define an artistic topic for each project cycle
March – May 2015 Residencies @ Scientific Partners: two residencies in each project cycle
Elaboration time: 2-6 weeks residency at the institutions of the scientific partners
May – July 2015 Residencies @ Ars Electronica’s Futurelab: one month at Ars Electronica’s Futurelab,
to delevop and create new work inspired by the scientific partner residencies
Sept – Oct 2015 Launch of Projects at Ars Electronica: projects (exhibitions and conferences) developed
on the basis of the defined artistic topic will be presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2015
Dec 2015 – July 2016 Touring Projects to the Partners: expanding the developed projects by content related works
out of the partner’s network to a contextual bigger exhibition; production of a modular and
mobile exhibition; tour of the modular and mobile exhibition with participation of the artists,
through Europe – to each of the partner locations

Target group:
We are inviting international artists working in the digital arts to submit their proposals
This competition is open for international artists and all kinds of innovative concepts and ideas in the fields of art and science.
„Art and science“: interactive art, digital musics & sound art, computer animation / Film / Vfx, digital communities & social media,
hybrid art, performance & choreography, digital design

Online Submission and pre-judging

via online submission tool on the homepage of Ars Electronica Submitters have to choose between the two scientific partners as
residency and have to include the following to their online application:
• A personal testimony video which introduces the artist, who describes why and how this residency will inspire new work (up to 5
minutes)
• An outline of a possible concept/idea which the artist wishes to pursue at the scientific partners and Futurelab
• A draft production plan with costing/costs and a timeline/schedule
• A selected portfolio of works which showcases projects the artist is proud of
• Biography and contact details
Evaluation criteria
Every concept submitted for consideration will be evaluated by a jury of experts in the order in which
it was received according to the following criteria:
•Aesthetics,
•Originality,
•Compelling conception,
•Innovation,
•Technique and quality of the presentation,
•Interest in the ideas of science as expressed by CERN or ESO
