Each of the following comments are real reactions posted in response to the UCLA TASER
INCIDENT video on YouTube.com ( https://youtu.be/5g7zlJx9u2E)

(Please read each one and decide which of Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning can be
ascribed to the comment. Briefly explain why you have chosen each answer.

PreconventionalStage
1: Obedience & Punishment
2: Self interest orientation (What’s in it for me)
Conventional stage
3: Interpersonal Concordance (Good boy/Good girl)
4: Law & Order
Post conventional
5: Social Contract & Individual Rights
6: Universal Ethical Principles

1.“there is no right to treat people like this, for whatever they did... they tasered him after
lying already tasered at the ground, maybe now you try to tell me that if you got tasered your
able to stand up ?”

Answer: Universal Ethical Principles

The person was just saying that it is not right to taze a person even if he did something
wrong and also they must not do it more than 5 times because we are only human beings and
we also feel pain

2.“Ok I'm what you call an anarchist but you still got to remember that the guy with the biggest
stick is the one you better listen to. Unless you want to get your ass handed to you...”

Answer: Obedience and Punishment

The person was clearly avoiding trouble and was saying that the authority has the power
to do the said act.

3.“This Is exactly what should happen in a civilized country, because being civilized means
having laws. Laws must be enforced by pain, otherwise why have them. This student got what
he deserved... actually he got off easy. I would have drained the battery on him.”

Answer: Social Contract and Individual Rights

The person speaking thinks that the person who was tased deserved it because he is
saying that being civilized means having laws and in order for that law to be justified pain must
be enforced due to the actions of the kid.

4.“He had his ID, he just didn't show it because the police were profiling; he was the only
student asked to show his ID in the entire library. The reason they have that policy is to keep
bums from sleeping there, but this kid had books in front of himand he was sweating over
midterms. How can you say someone deserved to be tazed FIVE TIMES for that?”

Answer: Self Interest Orientation

The person saying the quote was clearly standing up for the kid that was tased, he/ she
should not taze the kid that was only studying for his upcoming midterms.

5.“Funny how all the students watch like zombies in this situation. They don't even try to stand
up to the police officers. They should just leave him alone and he would go.”

Answer: Interpersonal Concordance

The students that were watching who mostly of them don't know what is happening
doesn't want to interfere because they were not used of seeing someone being tased in a
library and maybe some of them are studying due to their upcoming midterms exam and does
not want to get into trouble

6.“They are cops, you are not. No I.D. you leave. No leave, deal with cops. No deal with cops, get
tased. Obey the police (the ones with the guns and tasers). They say stand, you stand.

Answer: Law and Order

The one saying the quote is clearly emphasizing that the kid that was tasered must
abide to the rules in order to maintain peace.
Activity 2

Come up with an accurate response for each of the 6 stages of Kohlberg’s Theory.

Prompt : If your friend came up to you with a copy of this year's Ethics midterm examination,
would you take a peek?

Stage Peek or no peek? REASONING. The “why” is

very important.
Stage 1 No peek Example:i wouldn't peek
because the instructor might
caught me and him for
cheating
Stage 2 peek i might get punished but i will
take my chances because i
might fail the exam
Stage 3 no peek other students may think of
me as a lazy or unintelligent
person because i cheated
Stage 4 no peek i would not cheat because it
is one of the golden rule in
the classroom
Stage 5 peek everyone has their right to
choose anything in life
Stage 6 no peek having a zero score is better
than a perfect score that you
didn't earned.
