Step 1: Define CAD Tracing
Procedure

Create CAD tracing files in midas


Drawing.

1. Open midas Drawing software


2. In File>Import(R)..., select “1F
Tracing_new.dwg” and click
Open.
3. Zoom(In/Out) to view the plan.
To view the full Plan in the
Drawing Window, go to View(V) -
> Zoom(Z) -> Full(A).
4. Go to command window (at the
bottom) and type EDITGRID,
followed by Enter Key. The
Tracing Grid Editor dialogue box
opens up.
5. Check the selected tracing layers
and click [Save] button.
Step 1: Define CAD Tracing
Procedure

Create CAD tracing files in midas


Drawing.

6. Re-name it as “1F
Tracing_new.dwg” and click
[Save] button.
7. Click [Save] button. Replace the
existing file with the new file.
8. Carry out Steps 2 - 7 for “2F
Tracing_new.dwg” too.
9. Close midas Drawing and go back
to midas nGen window.
Step 1: Define CAD Tracing
Procedure
Import the tracing files into midas
nGen.

1. In Structure > Tracing/Grid >


Tracing File Import, select “1F
Tracing_new.dwg” and “2F
Tracing_new.dwg” one after the
other from the proper folder and
then click on [√].
2. Change Unit Setting into “KN” and
“m” at bottom right corner.
3. In Structure > Story > Story Data,
click [Add] and [√] button.
4. Click on ‘Add Story’ icon as shown
in the pic to Generate 2 stories
with 3.5 m height and click [√ ]
button.
Step 1: Define CAD Tracing
Procedure
Import the tracing files into midas
nGen.

5. Select “1F Tracing_new.dwg”


tracing for 1F and “2F
Tracing_new.dwg” for 2F under
CAD Drawing tab.
6. Click [√]. Check the tracing in the
model view.
Step 2: Define Material, Section and Thickness
Procedure

Define material and section


properties.

1. In Define > Material > Material,


click [Concrete] icon and
select [EN04] as code and
[C30/37]. Click [√].

2. In Define > Property > 1D Section,


click [Concrete] icon and
enter “400”mm and “600”mm for
B and H each. And then click
[Insert Template Section] to see
the section shape in the view
window.
3. Change the material into
“3.C30/37” , Name [Beam] and in
the top left corner and then click
[Apply] button.
Step 2: Define Material, Section and Thickness
Procedure

Define properties for sub-beams and


thickness for slabs.

4. To enter the section dimensions


for sub-beam, enter “200”mm
and “300”mm for B and H each in
the Section Template window.
Click [Insert Template Section],
change Name into [SubBeam]
and [Apply] button.

5. Click [Close] button as shown in


the picture .

6. In Define > Property > 2D


Thickness, select [C30/37] and
Enter “0.15 m” as the thickness,
change name to [Slab]. Click [√]
Step 3: Generate Columns, Walls, Beams and Slabs
Procedure

Generate Columns based on the


tracing file.

1. Go to “Story” Mode “T1:1F”.


2. Click “Column” in Member > 1D
Member .
3. Select “C30/37”for material.
4. Click [by Select(Auto Generation)]
icon.
5. Drag the region marked in green
and press [Apply] key to generate
columns.
Step 3: Generate Columns, Walls, Beams and Slabs
Procedure

Generate Walls using tracing file.

6. Click “Wall” in Member > 2D


Member > Wall.
7. Select “Wall(Plate-Meshed)” as
Analysis Type.
8. Click [Wall] icon to change
default type from “Reference
Line” to “Wall”. And then click
[By Select(Closed Line)] icon .
9. Drag the region marked in green
and press [Apply] key to generate
walls.
Step 4: Generate Columns, Walls, Beams and Slabs
Procedure

Generate Beams using tracing file.

10. Go to “T1:2F” story and click


“Beam” in Member > 1D
Member.
11. Select the section as “Beam” and
click [By Select(Line Segment)]
icon.
12. Select the lines marked in red in
the model view and press [Enter]
key to generate beams.
13. Press [ESC] key from the
keyboard.

19. Click “Beam” in Member > 1D

20. Generate sub beams by clicking
two points. Sub beams to be
generated are marked in yellow.

For discontinuous beams, Right

key after you generate each beam.

Step 4: Generate a Building by Adding Stories
Procedure

Generate a building by copying the


typical story.

1. Click “3D” mode from left top of


the model view.
2. In Structure > Story > Story Data,
click 2F and click [Add] button.
3. Enter 4 for Number of Stories and
select the option as shown in the
image for Replicate Story and
click [√].
4. Click [Auto Generate Story Data]
button and click [V].

Note : Unrequired story data (the


story level which has no member
present) will be deleted and story
data will be automatically updated in
accordance with the model data.

Step 5: Define Loads
Procedure
Define self-weight and slab loads for
super imposed dead load and live
load.

1. In Define > Define Set > Load


Set > Static Load Set, enter “DL”
in Name and select the Load Type
as “Dead Load(D)” and click [Add]
button. Similarly, enter “LL” in
Name and select “Live Load (L)”,
click [Add] ] and click [X] .
2. In Load > General > Self Weight,
define Self Weight with “-1” in Z
direction with “DL” Set.
3. In Load > Gravity > Slab Load >
Slab Load Type, define Slab Load
with entering the following
values, click [Add] and click [X].
Dead : -4 kN/m2
Live : -2.5 kN/m2
4. In Load > Gravity > Slab Load >
Slab Load, select entire model and
click [√] button.

Assign Wind Load, click […] button
in Design Wind Load.
Click [Add] button and select
[EN1991:2005] design code, click

Check Name as “Wind Load-1”
and Direction “0 degree”. ( 0
degree implies x-direction and 90
degree as y-direction). Click [√].

Note : To display story force, story


shear and overturning moment,
Click [Show Profile].

Tip : By selecting the ortho option,


the wind load is simultaneously
applied in both the Major ( here
X-direction) and ortho (here y-dir.)
direction. This is done by selecting
“Generate Load Set for ortho”
and entering Ortho scale Factor.
Step 5: Define Loads

Procedure
Define static seismic loads according
to Eurocode.

6. In Load > Lateral > Static


Seismic > Static Seismic Load,
change the Eccentricity of Major
& Ortho to None, then click […]
button in Design Seismic Load.
Click [Add] button and select
[EN1998:2004] design code. Click
[…] button in Approximate Period 7
to calculate the period
automatically. Click [Calculate]
button and click [√].

Click [√] for “Design seismic load”


window and close “design
function” window.
7. Assign Static Seismic Load in X
and Y direction by selecting the
ortho option and entering the
value as 1.
Note : To display story force, story
shear and overturning moment, Click
[Show Profile].
Step 5: Define Loads
Procedure
Define response spectrum load 8

according to Eurocode.
8. In Load > Lateral > Response
Spectrum > Response Spectrum,
click […] in Response Spectrum
Function. Click [Add] button and
then click […] button in Design
Spectrum.
9. Click [Add] and Select
[EN1998:2004] code and click [√].
Close “Design Spectrum” window. 10

10. Change Name and Set to “RS-X”.
Assign RS in X-dir by entering
“Excitation angle” as 0 degree.
Click [√].

Repeat Step 10 again. Enter Name


and Set as RS-Y and enter the
Excitation Angle as 90 degrees.
Step 6: Define Boundary Conditions, Offset, Check Model
Procedure

Assign fixed support to the bottom


nodes of the building.

1. Click mouse wheel in the model


view and select [Front] view.
2. In Boundary > Support > Support,
select the nodes marked in red
box by dragging the mouse with
that region and select “Fix” type.
Click [V] button.

Step 6: Define Boundary Conditions, Offset, Check Model

Procedure

Align top level between columns,


beams and slabs using Shape Offset.

3. In Member > Shape Offset >


Generate, select all members by
selecting the entire model in the
model view and press [Enter] key
from the key board to generate
Shape Offset. This option will
affect only to the model display
and drawings.
4. In Boundary > Offset > Auto
Generate, select [All Members] 4
option and click [√] button to
generate Beam End Offset and
Rigid Link which will affect the
analysis results.
5. Check rigid links and beam
offsets generated in work tree.

Step 7: Define Load Combination
Procedure

Generate Load Combinations


automatically as per design standard.

1. In Design > Settings > Design


Settings, Change Code Category as
“EuroCode” and click [√] button.
2. In Design > Load Combination >
Combination, select [Concrete]
icon.
3. Click [Auto Generate] button to
generate the load combinations
automatically.
4. Click [Add] button. Click [X] to
close the “Define Load
Combinations” window.
Step 8: Analysis Control and Perform Analysis
Procedure 1
1. In Analysis > Analysis Settings, go
to [Mesh] tab and select Length
for 2D Mesh Method and enter
“1 m” for the Length. Click [√]. 1

2. In Analysis > Define Analysis


Case > Static/RS, select [Analysis
Control] icon.
3. Select “Analysis Type” as Static
and check on “Consider P-Delta
Effect” option and select “DL & LL”
in the list.
4. Change “Analysis Type” as Modal
and confirm the analysis options.
5. Change Analysis type as
“Response Spectrum” and confirm
the analysis options. Click [√] to
apply the options and once again
Click [√].
6. Perform analysis by clicking [Run
Analysis] and click [√].
Step 9: Result Checking
Procedure

1. Check the result in the post


processing mode. Analysis results
can be viewed when [Analysis
Results] are activated in Results >
Category > Analysis Results.
2. All the results can be selected
and viewed in the results tree.

Tip. After performing an analysis,


model can be viewed with mesh edge
by selecting [Display Mode] icon.
Step 9: Result Checking
Procedure
To check Deformations (Case – DL)
1. Go to Static (P-Delta) ->INCR=5
(LOAD=1.000) [DL] ->
Deformations - > Double click on
Displacement-XYZ.

To view the Deformed shape and


the values at various points,
2. Check on the box [√] Deform and
[√] Value. The value can be
displayed for Absolute Maximum,
Min/Max, All.

3. Legend and Contour can be


displayed.

Similarly, Deformations can be


checked for other cases such as LL,
Wind Load, Seismic Load, Load
Combinations etc.
Step 9: Result Checking
Procedure
To check Reactions (Case – DL)
1. Go to Static (P-Delta) ->INCR=5
(LOAD=1.000) [DL] -> Reactions - >
Double click on Force-XYZ.

To view the Reactions at supports

2. Check on the box [√] Value. The


value can be displayed for
Absolute Maximum, Min/Max,
All.

3. Legend and Contour can be


displayed.

Similarly, Reactions at supports


can be checked for other cases
such as LL, Wind Load, Seismic
Load, Load Combinations etc.
Step 9: Result Checking
Procedure
To check Bending Moment -y (Case – DL)
1. Go to Static (P-Delta) ->INCR=5
(LOAD=1.000) [DL] -> Beam Forces
- > Double click on Bending
Moment-y.

To view the BM at various Members

2. Check on the box [√] Value. The


value can be displayed by Model,
Element and Member. Similarly,
values can be displayed as
Absolute Maximum, Min/Max,
All.

Note : You can explore the Results


tab to generate the results for
various Load cases and combinations.
Step 9: Result Checking
Procedure
View results in Tabular Form
1. Go to Table tab in the Tree Menu.

2. Go to Results -> Analysis and


double click on
Deformation/Reaction/Beam
forces etc, the result you want to
check.

3. The Results Table window opens,


double click on the required
element in the Model window
whose result you want to display
in the table.

Step 10: Perform Design and Check Results
Procedure

1. In Design > Setting > Design


Setting, confirm the design code.
Click [X] to close the window.

2. Make Design Group in Design >


Design Group > Auto-Generation
Design Group and clicking [√]
button.

3. Perform Design in Design > Run


Design, with [Rebar Auto-
Arrangement] option checked on.
Step 10: Perform Design and Check Results
Procedure

5. Check Design Result of Strength


by selecting the various results in
the work tree menu. Design
results will be activated when
“Design Results” is selected in
Results > Category > Design
Results.
6. In Results > Check > PM Curve,
click any column from the model
view to check PM interaction
curve.
7. In Results > Check > Design
Report, select any member from
the model view and select
“Detail” and click [√] button.

8. Similarly, explore Total status,


Strength check, serviceability
check and RC tabs under the
Design results.
Step 11: Report Generation
Procedure

Generate Batch report including


model input data, analysis results
and design results.

1. In Report & Drawing > MIDAS


Report > Generate Report, click
[New] button.
2. From the Item List on the left
side, double click the data to be
included in the word file.

Go through the entire Item list in


detail to decide which all results
to be included in the report and
double click them accordingly.

3. Click [Generate] button to see


the report.
4. Click [Export Report] menu and
[Export] button. MS word format
report will be automatically
generated.
Step 12: Drawing Generation
Procedure

Using the design results including


rebar information, generate drawings.

1. 1. In Report & Drawing > MIDAS


Drawing software > click on
Generate Drawing tab in the
ribbon menu.
2. Select Generate Structural
Design Overview and click any
position in the model view to
generate the overview table.
3. Click on Generate Drawing ->
Generate Structural Plan, click
[Floor Plan] and select 1st and 2nd
floor. Click [Ok] button. Click any
position in the model view to
enter the plan drawings.
Step 12: Drawing Generation Tip
If you cannot see Command row at the bottom of Midas Drawing window, you
can go to Tools > Workspace Display > Command Line Show/Hide menu.

Procedure

Generate elevation drawing using the


model information with the framing
plan.

4. In Generate Drawing > Generate


structural sections, press [enter]
key from the keyboard to define
section name as default one.
5. Click two different points from
the framing plan in the model
view. Then press [Enter] key from
the keyboard.
6. Once the rectangle box is shown
with the mouse, check the
desired depth to generate the
elevation and click on the model
view.
7. Click the proper position to
generate the elevation drawing.
Step 12: Drawing Generation
Procedure

8. In Generate drawing > double


click on Generate Member List…,
check the selected data and click
[OK] button.
9. Click the desired position in the
model view to generate member
list.
10. In File > Export > Export current
window to File, enter the name
and save the drawing into DWG
or DFX file.
