NewVibe

datasheet version 180418

www.op-electronics.com

Updates from datasheet version 231216:

• removed TRIM trimmer, placed a jumper between 2 and 3 pads on pcb
• removed the need of a heatsink on LM7818 regulator when powering the pedal from 15-16VAC

The NewVibe is quite a faithful replica of famous UniVibe(TM) pedal. It features 3 pot controls SPEED, DEPTH,
VOLUME and a switch to toggle between CHORUS and VIBRATO like effect. There are 3 LEDs to indicate bypass
status and chorus/vibrato selection.

Difference from the original reside in power supply section, output stage and lamp driving stage while input section,
phase shifting and LFO sections remain the same as in the original circuit.
Power supply section features the possibility to power the effect from AC or DC. If you are going DC you should use
a good 18V PSU with regulated voltage and low ripple. If you are going AC the circuit features its own 18V
regulator. All of the audio path runs at 18V giving the pedal a wide dynamic range.
The output section is just a transistor amplifier stage with volume control to compensate for volume droputs. Lamp
driving stage is now using a more robust Mosfet switch to supply current to the lamp. This avoid less heat stress on
the transistor.

Powering the NewVibe

The NewVibe circuit can be supplied both from 18VDC than 15VAC.

18VDC external PSU

Powering the unit from an external 18VDC PSU is the simplest way to power the NewVibe. Be sure to use a
regulated power supply unit which outputs a steady 18V voltage with low ripple for best performance. The PSU
should be able to supply a current of 200mA at least.

Connect ground of PSU to 0V and positive to 18V. IC2, C25, C29 and B1 are not needed in the circuit if you are
powering the circuit with 18VDC.

15VAC external or internal transformer

If you are not trained to wire an electrical main we strongly encourage you to use an external power
transformer. There's a high risk of injury, we are not joking here, you can kill yourself

Even if you are skilled to mains wiring you could always fall into noise induced from mains wiring, use of a toroidal
transformer, proper transformer placing and coaxial wiring (especially at the input) is suggested.
Of course the use of a fuse is mandatory.

With external transformer you only need to run two wires from the jack power connector directly to pcb 15VAC pads.
There's no need to observe polarity when connecting the 15VAC wires:

When powering the circuit from 15VAC you must use IC2 plus its own heatsink, C25, C29 and B1. C25 is a quite big
capacitor, you have to bend its terminals and mount it horizontally to save space.

Use a 3mm bolt with nut to mount the heatsink on IC2. The heatsink is needed to cool down the LM7818
temperature and prevent a premature failure.

TRUE-BYPASS or not.

The pedal can be wired to use standard true-bypass wiring but can be wired as the original to be always in chain. With
this last option only the effect will be turned off, by connecting a footswitch to CANCEL pads on pcb your guitar
signal will always run from input to output stage of the NewVibe with no effect applied to it.

Light Screen

The NewVibe uses light emitted from an incandescent bulb to change resistance on four LDRs each connected to a
phasing stage. A light screen sorrounding the four LDRs and lamp is used to avoid external light in, internal light out
and to maximize internal light reflections.
A light screen can be easily built with rigid paper and internal reflective silver tape. You can print this page or do your
own lightscreen. Dimensions are not crucials.
Cut along the continous line and bend along the dotted lines. You can use 3mm bolts with nuts to mount the light
screen directly on pcb:
1590BB

Latest tests made the heatsink unneccessary when powering the unit from a 15-16VAC external transformer. Check
however that LM7818 is not overheating (with pot DEPTH and SPEED at maximum).
Always mount the LM7818 on bottom side with isolating material when boulding inside a 1590BB.

Fitting the Newvibe inside 1590BB enclosures requires mounting LM7818 with heat sink and IRF830 on bottom side
of the pcb, use some kind of isolation between heatsink and pcb is strongly suggested:
Enclosure type

1590BB is suggested if:

- powering from external supply or external

transformer
- don't need to control the modulation with
a volume pedal externally
- want to save space in your pedalboard

1590XX is suggested if:

- powering from internal transformer

- need to control the modulation with an external volume pedal (since there would be more space for an auxiliary jack connector)
- space in your pedalboard is not a problem
True Bypass Wiring

Potentiometers can be mounted directly on pcb as well the DPDT toggle switch. They have to be mounted on pcb
bottom, solder side. Solder a wire from ground to one of the potentiometers metallic shield for enclosure grounding.

Notice that power jack has black and red wires indicating you have to observe polarity when using external 18VDC
supply. Power jack to 15VAC has same color for both wires indicating there's no polarity to observe.

Power jacks are both showed in the same drawing for semplicity. You need to use only one power jack of course.
