Despite of this being my first internship, they kept me busy with a lot of work and
sufficient amount of responsibility which helped me to learn and gain a lot of experience
about several aspects of the legal field of which I had little to no knowledge about. Before
hiring me, they conducted an interview and tested if I was a worthy candidate. After
selection, I was granted a four week internship with their prestigious firm.
First week- My first day was an orientation day where I was introduced to all the
advocates and other employees working in AKJ Attorneys and solicitors LLP. Then I
dived right into work which included research work on Transfer of Property Act and the
rights of the tenants and the landlords. I read through various landmark judgements and
cases to understand the Act. I had not studied that act before and hence needed thorough
research. The firm had a beautiful library with multiple books on various subjects and
laws. They had various law journals and the best part was that I had unrestricted full
access to all these books.
Second week- In my second week, the court started getting busier and I had the task of
following the advocates to the court, observing the court proceedings, taking down
important orders and dates, important points made during the arguments, knowing how to
check when you have to be present for your case and the important manners and
etiquettes to be followed when you enter a courtroom. Along with this I was still
researching, reading up on matter/cases, finding relevant citations and case laws and
relevant information regarding those cases which I was reading. Along with me, three
more interns joined their firm in the second week. The interns were from different
colleges form all over the country and I got to learn plenty from them as well.
Third Week - In the third week I was given more responsibility as they gave me work to
draft more contracts, documents, MOU’S and other such legal documents as well as to
spell check and review the grammar and information drafted by them. This gave me a
hands-on experience with the basic drafting work, which is one of the most important
skill needed by a lawyer. To refine my drafting skills, they even suggested and gave me
books form their library that explained the art of drafting extensively. Further, I was
asked to write various articles for the blog on their website. This week, I wrote an article
on the landmark judgment of the LGBTQ rights. It helped me immensely as it required
me to go through the entire judgment which was very long but at the same time
beautifully written and allowed me to understand the case.
Fourth week - In the fourth week I accompanied the advocates to several different courts
across Gurgaon and Delhi, to get an experience of the different courts set up for
administering justice for issues arising in different fields. Though the courts did not last
long as the courts were closing for the summer. But the few visits I got to the court, I
learnt a lot about the nitty gritties of the daily courtlife.
