LESSON 2: BASIC CONCEPTS IN ICT
TECHNOLOGY – refers to a mix of process and product used in the application of knowledge.
It includes both tools from pencil and paper to the latest electronic gadgets and tools for practical
tasks.
Information and Communication Technology Literacy or ICT Literacy

- The use of digital technology, communication tools and/or networks to access, manage,
integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information in order to function in a knowledge
society (Guro 21, 2011)
Educational Technology
- The use of technology in teaching and learning. It includes both the non-digital (flip charts,
pictures, models, realias, etc.) and digital (electronic tools: hardware, software and connections,
etc.)
Digital Literacy
-the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share and create contents using information technologies and
the internet (Cornell University)
- The ability to use information and communication requiring both cognitive and technical skills
Digital Learning
- any type of learning that is accompanied by technology or by instructional practice that
makes effective use of technology
- encompasses the application of a wide spectrum of practices which included blended or
virtual learning.
- can come as online or offline which utilizes digital technology
Online Digital Tools and Apps

- Use an internet connection to access the information needed.
Example: Skype, a telecommunication application software product that specializes in providing
video chat and calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices via internet and to regular
phones.

◦ Evan Spiegel isn’t just the youngest billionaire
on this list but also the youngest billionaire in
the world. During his college years at Stanford
University, Evan, together with two others in
2011 cofounded the mobile Snap Chat app, an application that enables its users to
record videos, take photos, add text and drawings and also share with contacts. The
application with over 100 million clienteles consists majorly of the youths.
Jack Dorsey (38)

◦ Tattooed entrepreneur Jack Dorsey has been running two tech heavyweights: Twitter
and Square. At Twitter, cofounder Dorsey is back as CEO after the departure of Dick
Costolo in June 2015.
◦ Dorsey is also heading payments company Square, which he cofounded in 2009; Square
went public in November 2015 at a stock price well below its latest $6 billion private
valuation.
◦ A self-taught computer coder, Dorsey dropped out of New York University in 1999,
became a certified masseur and dabbled in fashion design before gravitating fully to tech.
◦ In 2006, with Ev Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass, he cofounded Twitter and was the
company's chief executive until 2008.

◦ The Ukrainian born entrepreneur co-
founded WhatsApp, which is currently
the world’s largest instant messaging
app for smartphones with over 800 million worldwide users. After selling WhatsApp Inc
in February 2014, to Facebook Inc for $19 billion, he became one of the managing
directors of Facebook Inc.
Bobby Murphy
◦ The Filipino-American co-founder of Snapchat is the world's second youngest billionaire
on Forbes' Billionaire list.
◦ Bobby Murphy, 26, is estimated to be worth $1.5 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
◦ Baby-faced Murphy made his fortune from Snapchat, along with his friend Evan Spiegel,
who at 24, is the world's youngest billionaire.
◦ Snapchat is a popular temporary photo messaging app. It is currently valued at $10
billion and has 100 million users a month. Forbes estimates both Murphy and Spiegel
have a 15 percent stake each in Snapchat.
◦ Murphy, whose mother emigrated from the Philippines, grew up in Berkley, California.
◦ Murphy and Spiegel met while they were students at Stanford University. They were both
members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
◦ Murphy was a mathematics and computational science major, while Spiegel was in the
product-design program.
