Little Boy With A Slingshot: This Text For Questions Number 1-4
Once upon a time Sammy and his sister Marie visited their grandparents at their farm.
Sammy picked up a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods,
but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for the
lunch. As he was walking back, he saw Grandma’s pet duck.
Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly which hit the duck square in the head and
killed it. He was shocked and grieved. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the pile of
woods. Marie had seen it all from the window, but she said nothing. After the lunch, the
next day Grandma said “Marie, let’s wash the dishes.” Marie said,”But Grandma, Sammy
told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.”
Then she whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” Sammy got nervous knowing his
sister knew about the duck and if he did not obey, she might tell his grandparents about
it. So, without saying anything, he did the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing but Grandma said, “
I’m sorry but I need Marie to help make a supper.” Marie just smiled and said,” Well
that’s all right because Sammy told me he wanted to help.”
She whispered again to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” So, Marie went fishing and
Sammy stayed to help. After several days of Marie taking advantage of Sammy, he finally
couldn’t stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the
duck.
Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said,” Sweetheart, I know. I was standing at
the window and I saw the whole thing but because I love you, I’ve forgiven you. I was just
wondering how long you would let Marie take advantage of you.”

Glowing candles add the perfect romantic touch to your dinner table or holiday spread.
Burning candles often drip wax, however, leaving ugly blotches on your table. Melted
wax is not hot enough to damage your furniture, but the color can leave a stain on
1ightcolored wood, so it’s best to remove the candle wax as soon as possible. If you act
carefully, you can remove the wax without scratching or gouging the table.
Tip
Test the vinegar solution in an inconspicuous spot underneath the table before wiping
the surface of the wood.
Warning
Never leave burning candles unattended.
Steps:
- Soften dried wax with a blow dryer on medium heat. Keep the blow dryer 3 to 4 inches
away from the table.
- Blot up the softened wax with a soft, white cloth.
- Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar into 1 cup of water.
- Dip the cloth into the vinegar mixture, and wipe away any leftover wax.
-Clean your table with furniture polish to restore the shine.

Skateboards
Skateboards are sport equipment used for the activity of skateboarding. A skateboard
consists of a specially designed maple wood board combined with a polyurethane coating
in order to have smoother slides and stronger durability. Most skateboards are-made
with 7 plies of this wood.
The board types depend largely upon its desired function. The two common types of
skateboards are the long board and the short board. Long boards are the type of
skateboards with longer wheelbases (over 33 inches long) and larger, softer wheels.
Short boards are the type of skateboards which commonly have a rectangular shape kick
tail at the back and a rounded nose in the front. They are usually less than 34 inches long.
Besides, long boards are usually faster and are mostly used for cruising and racing, while
short boards are mostly used for doing tricks.

However, much greenery has been removed in order for the land needed. Land
reclamation can be damaging to corals and marine life. Corals are usually moved to
another place when land is to be reclaimed. The corals might not be able to survive in that
certain habitat, and thus die out.
In some countries, where the project is large-scale, they do not even bother to re-plant the
corals elsewhere, instead just reclaim the land on their habitat, causing them to die out
immediately. Marine life, such as fish, might not have enough food after the underwater
plantations are destroyed due to reclamation of land. This applies to the food chain. The
water might also be polluted from the soil used to reclaim land, causing the fish to die and
blocking out sunlight, depriving the underwater plants of growth. Marine habitat arc also
destroyed; therefore, the marine creatures would be forced to move to another new habitat.
Some might not be able to adapt, and thus die out. Some would just die without even
finding a new habitat, as they cannot move long distances in water.
Finally, the reasons and examples look tempting to humans, but marine life is life too! We
should try to protect it as much as possible, instead of just focusing on the advantages.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Captain Phillips is an upcoming 2013 American biographical action thriller film
directed by Paul Greengrass based upon the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali
Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan
Talty, and starring Tom Hanks. It is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and
Michael De Luca. The film tells a biopic of merchant mariner Captain Richard
Phillips, who was taken hostage for several days by Somali Pirates when the
container ship Maersk Alabama which sailed from southern Oman drown along the
coast of Somalia and then to Kenya was hijacked in 2009.
Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a veteran merchant mariner, still lives in
his native New England, and he’s a plainspoken family man full of anxiety about
the economically bleak new world his kids are facing. When his wife (Chaterine
Keener) drops him off at the airport, we can see reverse her. The film then cuts
to Somalia, a land of dust and poverty, where the pirates are recruited for their
mission as if they were migrant farm workers lining up to be chosen for that
day’s labor. Greengrass doesn’t have to fill in much about the violent, chaotic
breakdown of Somalia to let us know that these men have little choice.
The film does not generate quite the same level of excruciating suspense as some of
Greengrass’ previous triumphs, but it nonetheless holds us hostage as it proceeds. As
for the four Somali immigrants, they are remarkably effective in their first
professional acting gigs
People wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviours are formed. Two distinct schools of
thought on the matter have developed. The two approaches are very different from one another. The
controvercy is often referred to as nature and nurture.
Those who support the nature side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behaviour patterns are
largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little to do with our abilities,
characteristics and behaviour is central to this theory.
Proponents of the nurture theory claim that our environment is more important than our biologically based
instinct in determining how we will act. They see humans as beings whose behaviour is almost completely
shaped by their surroundings.
Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behaviour. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our
behaviour lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controvercy will continue for a long time is
certain.

Faster planes and cheaper flights are making travel easier than before. In the most ‘developed’ societies,
visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The tourism industries of both developed and developing
countries have recognized this fact and are learning to take advantage of it.
There are, however, a few problems associated with this new industry. Initially, there is the increasing crime
rate. Some locals see tourists as easy prey because, not only are they unfamiliar with the territory and
therefore unable to take care themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and
jewelry which can be disposed of quickly for profit.
Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading contagious
diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness is
diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases which resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be
increasingly concerned about this issue.
Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too many visitors.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and there are plans to
restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays.
These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself to an extensive
tourism development programme.
35. Why does the natural environment become one of the serious problems associated with the faster planes and
cheaper flight? Because ....
A. It easily started an epidemic before their illness was diagnosed
B. It can be destroyed by too many visitors
C. The health problem will increase
D. They carry visible items of wealth
E. It can increase crime rate
36. “One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness is diagnosed.” (paragraph 3)
The underlined word means ....
A. Found D. Examined
B. Observed E. Healed
C. Identified

In daily life, every person faces many kinds of problems. He/she must find ways to solve the problems. One of the ways
is compromise. A compromise is an agreement in which people involved in an argument reduce their demands or
changes their opinion in order to agree with each other. In other word, they can make a win-win solution.
In the traditional market, a seller and a buyer meet to do a trading process. They discuss to get the deal for the price of
some goods. The buyer usually bargains for the low prices until the seller agrees. If there is a deal between two sides, a
compromise has done. Compromise makes both the seller and the buyer solve the problems without any
disappointment.
A compromise is also necessary for people to work in group to discuss a problem as we know, they may have different
opinions and ideas to solve the problems. For example, while they are discussing the problem, they sometimes argue to
each other. By having a compromise, they can accept the agreement.
In conclusion, compromise makes the problem solved in a simple way and also gives benefits to both sides.

Every American is proud of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom. The Statue of Liberty, one of the largest
ever built, stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor and has greeted millions of American immigrants who
have come from Europe to the New World.
The Statue of Liberty was built by Fredrick Bartholdi. The French gave it to America as a gift in honour of the
revolutions for freedom and liberty in both countries.
The monument was built out of copper plates that were put on a steel frame. Together with the concrete
which it stands on the statue rises almost 100 metres into the sky. It shows a woman in a robe, wearing a
crown with 7 spikes and holding a torch in her hand. In her left hand she holds a tablet with the inscription
“July 4, 1776”, the date of the Declaration of Independence.
47. What was the reason for the French give the Statue of Liberty to America?
A. America needed it to greet millions of immigrants.
B. French presented to American people as a present for their struggle
C. French wanted to protect a lot of immigrants in new world.
D. French intended the Statue of Liberty as the representative of Europe.
E. America come from Europe to the New World

I (would like to express my sincere condolences on) was shocked with the recent passing of your father.
Pamela and the children also send their thoughts and prayers to you and your family at this difficult time.
Although I didn’t know your dad that well, on the half dozen or so occasions that I spent time in his company
over the years, I did come to realize his great kindness and compassion towards those less fortunate than him.
And I do know that he was very highly respected throughout this community and profession, and his good
works changed the lives of many.
You were truly fortunate to have such a man as a model in your life.
As you know, it was not that long ago that my own father passed away, so I have some idea of what you and
your family are going through. I realize that no words of comfort are quite enough to replace the loss.
Please pass my deepest sympathies on to your mother, and brother, and sister, and to all of your father’s
grandchildren.
Yours in sympathy,
Gord Henderson

I lost my father when I was only nine years old. This was the biggest lose I have had. He was everything to me,
his only daughter. We were so close. I did not lose him to death though. I lost him in a much harder way. I lost
my father to drugs. He got addicted and started to ignore my brother and me.
One cool summer night, my brother, a couple of our friends, and I were watching Scary Movie 3 in the living
room. Around 9:30 pm., when I looked toward the kitchen, I saw orange and yellow flames reflecting off the
door’s window. It was a mess explosion caused by his careless actions under the influence of the drugs.
After the fire was out, I saw my dad run around to the backyard and jump into the pool. I knew then that he
had gotten burned. He ended up confined in the hospital. After he got better, they put him in jail for a month
under drug charges. I was so mad and hurt, and suffered from severe depression. It destroyed my health and
my social life.
One day, one of my teacher stopped me in the hall to ask if I was okay. She asked if she could help me, if I
would tell her what was going on. So I did. She helped save me and lift me back up. After a while, I started to
feel and do better. She is now one of my greatest friends and mentors, and we talk daily. I could never repay
her for everything she has done for me.
Through my experiences, I learned never to do anything without thinking of how it will impact the people
around me.
