SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1.8 PROHIBITED MACHINE OPERATION
The following examples of machine abuse and misuse
1 should never be attempted by even the most experienced
operator on a standard or a long reach excavator. Such
abuse and misuse of this machine and its attachments
can result in serious bodily injury, death, severe equip-
ment damage and shortened service life of the machine.
Under no circumstance should any of these operations
be attempted. Use common sense and follow proper op-
eration procedures found in this Operators Manual while
operating this equipment. It is important to mention that SK32001040
the Kobelco long reach attachment is designed specifi-
cally for operation in loose, light materials with a properly DO NOT USE TRACTIVE FORCE
sized bucket. The instructions given in this manual de-
scribe many situations which could cause structural dam-
age to the long reach attachment if the machine were
operated incorrectly.

A. DO NOT USE TRACTIVE FORCE OF THE MA-

CHINE FOR LOADING THE BUCKET ATTACH-
MENT NOR TO PUSH OR PULL ANY OBJECTS.
Doing so will exert excessive force on the machine
structure, front end attachments and could cause
severe equipment damage and/or personal injury
SK32001041
could occur. Use tracks for normal travel opera-
tions only. DO NOT USE SWINGING FORCE

B. DO NOT USE SWINGING FORCE OF THE MA-

CHINE FOR OPERATIONS.
Doing so will exert excessive force to the machine
structure, front end attachments and shorten life of
the swinging system of the machine. Also, serious
injury or death could result from such operations.

C. DO NOT PERFORM “HAMMERING” OPERA-

TIONS WITH THE BUCKET.
Performing operations such as hammering and pil-
ing will cause extensive damage to the machine SK32001042
and its components. These types of operations can

1.9 END OF WORK SHIFT SAFETY

Perform all of the following procedures after each shift
1 is complete to insure the machine it in optimal operat-
ing condition for the next shift or job site.
A. Move the machine to a firm, level surface.
B. Lower attachment to the ground.
C. Refill fuel tank to full mark to reduce air volume
and condensation (moisture). This will decrease the
possibility of freezing in the fuel tank, rusting due
to moisture and other problems associated with SK32001045
start up and operation.
D. Close and secure all windows in place to prevent THOROUGHLY CLEAN AND INSPECT THE MA-

nents of the machine. BEFORE RESUMING OPERATION
E. Thoroughly clean and inspect the machine. Per-
form lubrication maintenance and repair or replace
any problem areas found before restarting the
machine.
F. If operating the machine in cold climates, it may be
necessary to remove the batteries from the ma-
chine and store in a warm well ventilated area. In-
stall the batteries in the machine before next start
up. This will help prevent premature battery dete-
rioration.
G. Remove key from key switch and lock all doors and
access panels.
H. Install vandalism guards if necessary.

and try it again.
E. Always use low speed for loading and unloading from
trailer.
F. After loading the machine, rest the attachment on the
trailer, shut off the engine, and set the safety lever to
the "Lock" up position.
G. Use cable or wire rope with sufficient capacity to se-
cure front and rear of the machine to the trailer. Place
chalk blocks at each end of the machine tracks to
prevent movement.
H. Provide proper padding on edges to protect wire rope
from damaging.
I. Make sure to know the total weight, length, width and
height of the machine being transported.
J. Study the route to be traveled. Investigate bridges,
overpasses, and height of road signs on route.
K. Obtain any permits required from proper government
agencies for machine transportation.
L. Use only a trailer with a rated capacity sufficient to
transport the machine.
M. Refer to Section 5 "TRANSPORTATION" for details

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1.11 PRECAUTIONS FOR TOWING THE MACHINE
When ever you can't get the machine out of soft soil,
1 place cables or wire ropes around the axle frame as
indicated in Fig. YN-3-22. Make sure to use pads
around the frame edges to protect the wire rope from
damaging. Use cable or wire rope with sufficient ca-
pacity to pull the weight of the machine.

NOTE
If the machine is broke down and access to the travel
reduction units is possible, refer to Section 10 "SPECIAL
YN-3-22
PROCEDURES" for special instructions on how to release
the travel motor brakes. In addition, if attachments plus
upper structure have to be repositioned, refer to special
instructions on how to release swing brake. See Section
10 "SPECIAL PROCEDURES".

NOTE
Do not pull the machine utilizing the brackets welded on
the lower plates of the car body. These brackets are pro-
YN-3-23
vided for pulling lightweight objects only. See Figure YN-
3-23.

TOW MACHINE PROPERLY

Attach the cables or wire ropes to the vehicle used to
pull the machine. Start engine, place the safety lever
in the "unlock" down position, set the travel speed to
low ( ) and operate both travel levers in the proper
direction while pulling with the other vehicle.

WARNING
> While towing, do not enter between the machine and
towing vehicle.
> Do not apply a shock load onto the towing rope.
> Do not use the brackets on the machine's lower frame
to tow the machine.
> Keep the wire rope horizontally, and perpendicular to
the crawler frame.
> Tow the machine slowly at low speed.
> Make sure to provide proper padding around the frame
edges to protect the wire rope from damaging the
carbody or axils
