Kinds of Notes and their Time Value

Musical symbols used to represent sounds are called notes. Each musical note has an equivalent
value or time duration to produce the correct sound. The longer a note is sounded, the more beats the
note receives.

Kinds of Rests and their Time Value

Musical symbols used to represent silences are called rests. Each musical rest signifies an
equivalent value or time duration to stop awhile, pause, or keep silent for a moment for the number of
beat the rest symbol has.

Dotted Notes and Rests

The use of dots changes the time value of a note or a rest. Notes and rests with a dot after their symbol
increase the time value by half of its original value.

You need to produce the exact time value of notes,

rests, and dotted notes and rests
in order to perform correctly the song in a musical score.
