Keywords: Descriptive statistics. Sampling Distribution. Sampling Error. Mean and
Standard Deviation of the Sampling Distribution. Central Limit Theorem.
where X is sample mean, s is sample standard deviation, n is the sample size, Z α2 is read
from the standard normal distribution table for the given confidence level.
Conditions: Normal population with unknown variance OR Non-normal population, large
sample n ≥ 30 with unknown variance.
where X is sample mean, s is sample standard deviation, n is the sample size, t α2 ,n−1 is
obtained from the t distribution table for n − 1 degrees of freedom and the given confidence
level.
Conditions: Population is approximately normal distributed, sample n < 30 and σ is not
known.

AMA1110 2019/20 Semester 1 Exercise 10
B Exercise
1. A random sample of 16 students is chosen from University X and their heights (in
meters) are measured. It is found that
16
X 16
X
xi = 24 and x2i = 38.25,
i=1 i=1
where xi is the height of the ith student. It is also known that the population height
follows a normal distribution.
2. A research firm conducted a survey to determine the mean amount steady smokers
spend on cigarettes during a week. They found the distribution of amounts spent
per week followed the normal distribution with a population standard deviation of
$5. A sample of 49 steady smokers revealed that X = $20.
3. A specific motor, when working on 20 amps of current with 20k rpm speed, suffers
from a stray-load loss that has a normal distribution with standard deviation of 5
watts. The factory is working on figuring out a confidence interval for the mean of
this normal distribution. The consultant company draws a sample of size n to find
the sample mean 70.2 watts.
4. The resistance of a batch of resistors has a normal distribution with standard de-
viation of 60 ohm. Students do experiment to find a confidence interval of the
population mean µ.
(a) Find a 95% confidence interval of µ if a sample of 17 resistors are drawn with
sample mean 995 ohm.
(b) Find a 99% confidence interval of µ with the same sample in (a).
(c) Find the length of the 90% confidence interval if the sample size is 50.
(d) To make a 95% confidence interval of length no longer than 30, find the mini-
mum sample size.

AMA1110 2019/20 Semester 1 Exercise 10
5. Suppose we take a sample of size 20, independently from a normal population with
unknown variance to obtain the sample mean 10.5 and sample variance 2.1. Find
the 80%, 90%, and 95% confidence intervals of the population mean.
6. Neodymium is one of the rare earth element which is used to synthesize permanent
magnet. A team of researchers collected 20 mineral samples containing neodymium
oxide from various places of Bayan Obo deposit to determine the neodymium abun-
dance. Suppose the abundance has a normal distribution with unknown variance.
After experiments, the team determines that the average abundance of the sample
is 4.3% with sample standard deviation 2%. Find a 95% confidence interval for the
population mean.
(a) If the population variance is not known, find a 95% confidence interval for the
population mean.
(b) If we know that the population variance is 1.052, find a 95% confidence interval.
9. The molecular spintronics is a new physics area dealing with single molecular de-
vices. However, to construct this sort of devices on a single-molecular level is
difficult. A skilled scientist can successfully grow one device out of hundreds of ex-
periments. During the past two years Dr Lincoln did 300 experiments each month
and successfully constructed 4.3 devices per month on average, with standard de-
viation 0.2. Find a 95% confidence interval for the rate of successes of Dr Lincoln
(which we assume here to have approximately a normal distribution with unknown
variance).

AMA1110 2019/20 Semester 1 Exercise 10
10. It is known that the length of a certain product follows a normal distribution. A
sample of twenty five products is randomly chosen and their lengths x1 , . . . , x25 are
25
measured. It is known that the sample variance s2 = 384 and
25
X 425
x2i = .
i=1
16
(a) Find the sample mean X and construct a 99.8% confidence interval for the
population mean length.
(b) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean length if σ 2 =
0.07.
11. Consider a sample of size n sampled from a large population that is known to follow
a normal distribution.
(a) If n = 50, the average of the sample is 10 and σ 2 = 16, construct a 95%
confidence interval for the population mean.
(b) If n = 40, the average of the sample is 11 and σ 2 = 15, construct a 98%
confidence interval for the population mean.
(c) If n = 25, the average of the sample is 12 and σ 2 = 14, construct a 92%
confidence interval for the population mean.
(d) If n = 20, the average of the sample is 13 and s2 = 13, construct a 98%
confidence interval for the population mean.
(e) If n = 16, the average of the sample is 14 and s2 = 12, construct a 95%
confidence interval for the population mean.
