Waking and Sleeping The Lord

• Outside the Deity room, sit on an äsana and perform äcamana.

• Offer obeisances to your spiritual master, saying his praëäma prayers and
requesting his blessings to perform the day's activities:

nama oà viñëu-pädäya kåñëa-preñöhäya bhü-tale


çrémate [spiritual master's name] iti nämine

I offer my respectful obeisances unto [spiritual master's


name], who is very dear to Lord Kåñëa, having taken shelter
at His lotus feet.

• While ringing a bell just outside the Deity room, you may chant the following
verses, meditating on the Lord awakening and begging Him to bestow His
mercy:

so 'säv adabhra-karuëo bhagavän vivåddha-


prema-smitena nayanämburuhaà vijåmbhan
utthäya viçva-vijayäya ca no viñädaà
mädhvyä giräpanayatät puruñaù puräëaù

The Lord, who is supreme and is the oldest of all, is


unlimitedly merciful. I wish that He may smilingly bestow
His benediction upon me by opening His lotus eyes. He can
uplift the entire cosmic creation and remove our dejection by
kindly speaking His directions. [ 3.9.25]

deva prapannärti-hara prasädaà kuru keçava


avalokana-dänena bhüyo mäà parayäcyuta

O Keçava, O infallible Lord, O You who remove the distress
of the surrendered souls! Please bestow Your mercy upon me
by again awarding me Your transcendental glance.

jaya jaya kåpamaya jagatera nätha


sarva jagatere koro çubha-dåñöi-päta

All glories, all glories to the merciful Lord of the universe! O


Lord, please cast Your auspicious glance upon all the worlds.

• Before entering the Deity room, draw the Lord's attention by making a
sound, either by clapping your hands, ringing a bell, or knocking on the
Deity room door.

Open the door, turn on the lights, and chant the names of the Deities in a
festive mood:

jaya çré-çré-guru-gauräìga, jagannätha-baladeva-


subhadrä, rädhä-çyämasundara [or your Deities' names] ké-jaya

• Then step into the Deity room with your right foot first and light the
ghee or oil lamps.

• While ringing a small bell with your left hand, approach your spiritual
master's bed, touch his lotus feet with your right hand, and chant:

uttiñöhottiñöha çré-guro tyaja nidräà kåpä-maya

O all-merciful spiritual master, please rise from sleep.

Follow a similar procedure for waking the Deities:

• Approach Lord Nityänanda's bed, touch His lotus feet, and chant:

uttiñöha jähnaveçvara yoga-nidräà tyaja prabho


nämno haööe divya-nämaà su-çraddhärthaà vitarasi

O Nityänanda Prabhu, Lord of Jähnavä, please arise and give


up Your divine sleep. At the marketplace of the holy name
You distribute the divine name, asking only for one's faith in
payment.

• Approach Lord Caitanya's bed, touch His lotus feet, and chant:

uttiñöhottiñöha gauräìga jahi nidräà mahäprabho


çubha-dåñöi-pradänena trailokya-maìgalaà kuru

O Lord Gauräìga, please rise from sleep and bless the three
worlds with Your auspicious glance.

• Next approach the bed of Lord Jagannätha, Lord Balaräma, and Çrématé
Subhadrä, touch Their lotus feet, and chant:

tyaja nidräà jagan-nätha çré-baladevottiñöha ca


jagan-mätar ca subhadre uttiñöhottiñöha çubha-de

O Lord Jagannätha and Lord Baladeva, please give up your


sleep and arise. O Çrématé Subhadrä, dear mother of the
universe, please arise and bestow good fortune upon us.

• Then approach Rädhä's and Kåñëa's bed, touch Their lotus feet, and chant:

éçvara çré-hare kåñëa devaké-nandana prabho

nidräà muïca jagan-nätha prabhäta-samayo bhavet

O supreme controller, O Lord Hari, O Kåñëa, O son of


Devaké, O master, O Lord of the universe, please give up
Your sleep, for daybreak has come.

go-gopa-gokulänanda yaçodä-nanda-vardhana
uttiñöha rädhayä särdhaà prätar äséj jagat-pate

O master of the universes, O bliss of Gokula, the cowherds,


and the cows, O You who gladden the hearts of Yaçodä and
Nanda, please rise from bed with Çré Rädhikä, for morning
has come.

Chant the following for other Deities:

uttiñöhottiñöha govinda uttiñöha parameçvara


uttiñöha kamalä-känta trailokyaà maìgalaà kuru

O Govinda, O Parameçvara, O beloved of Lakñmé, please rise


and bestow good fortune on all the three worlds.

For other Deities, chant uttiñöhottiñöha, "please rise," and the name of the Deity.

Making the Lords sleep:


• Invite Their Lordships to take rest by chanting the following mantra (for
Rädhä-Kåñëa):

ägaccha çayana-sthänaà priyäbhiù saha keçava


divya-puñpätya-çayyäyäà sukhaà vihara mädhava

Now come, O Keñava, along with Your beloved Çrématé

Rädhäräëé and Her friends, to the bed covered with
transcendental, aromatic flowers. Now happily enjoy Your
pastimes, O Mädhava.

For Kåñëa-Balaräma chant the following verse:

çayyäm ägacchataà kåñëa yaçodänanda-vardhana


çayyäm ägacchataà räma patitaà mäà dayäà kuru

O Kåñëa, O source of Mother Yaçodä's happiness, now please


come to Your bed. O Lord Balaräma, please come to Your bed
and bestow Your mercy upon me, who am lowly and fallen.

For Lord Jagannätha, Lord Balaräma, and Çrématé Subhadrä chant the
following prayer:

ägaccha çayana-sthänam agrajeëa hy adhokñaja


ägaccha nija-çayyäà ca subhadre me dayäà kuru

O Lord Jagannätha, if You please, You and Your elder


brother Balaräma may now come to Your beds. O Mother
Subhadrä, please come to your resting place and kindly
bestow your mercy upon me.

For Lord Gauräìga, chant the following verse:

ägaccha viçrama-sthänaà sva-gaëaiù saha gauräìga


kñaëaà viçramya sukhena lélayä vihara prabho

O Lord Gauräìga, please come to Your resting place along


with Your associates. O Lord, rest comfortably for a moment,
enjoying Your pastimes.

Then chant this prayer to Lord Nityänanda:

ägaccha çayana-sthänaà nityänanda jagad-guro


tava rüpe mahä-viñëor anante çayanaà kuru

O spiritual master of the universe, Lord Nityänanda, please
come to Your place of rest. In Your form of Mahä-Viñëu,
please rest upon the thousand-headed serpent known as Çeña.

Then you may chant the following prayers:

sädhu väsädhu vä karma yad yad äcaritaà mayä


tat sarvaà bhagavan viñëo gåhäëärädhanaà param

apäà samépe çayanäsane gåhe


divä ca rätrau ca yathä ca gacchata
yad asti kiïcit sukåtaà kåtaà mayä
janärdanas tena kåtena tuñyatu

O Lord, please accept all I have done, whether complete or


incomplete, as if it were the best kind of worship. O Lord
Janärdana, if I have performed any pious deeds, please be
satisfied with what I have done during the day or night,
while sitting or moving, in the house or outside.

Follow the same procedure for putting your spiritual master to rest chant:

ägaccha çayana-sthänaà sva-gaëaiù saha çré-guro

O spiritual master, please come to your resting place, along


with all your associates.

For other Deities chant:

ägaccha çayana-sthänaà sva-gaëaiù saha

and the name of the Deity.

Mantras for Tulasi Maharani:

While sprinkling water on Çrématé Tulasé-devé with your right hand

chant the following mantra:

(oà) govinda-vallabhäà devéà bhakta-caitanya-käriëém


snäpayämi jagad-dhätréà kåñëa-bhakti-pradäyiném

I am bathing goddess Tulasé-devé, who is very dear to


Govinda, who is the mother of the universe, who gives life to
all the devotees, and who bestows devotion to Lord Kåñëa.

With your right hand, carefully pick the leaves or soft


along with their stems-one at a time-while
repeatedly chanting the :

(oà) tulasy amåta-janmäsi sadä tvaà keçava-priyä


keçavärthaà cinomi tväà vara-dä bhava çobhane

O Tulasé, you are born from nectar. You are always very dear
to Lord Keçava. Now, to worship Lord Keçava, I am
collecting your leaves and . Please bless me.

Take special care to avoid causing Çrématé Tulasé-devé any pain. Pluck her
leaves with your right hand while holding the branch in your left, taking care
not to break it. Do not use scissors or a knife to cut the leaves from the plant.
When finished, recite the kñamä-prärthanä-mantra, begging her pardon:

cayanodbhava-duùkhaà ca yad hådi tava vartate


tat kñamasva jagan-mätaù våndä-devi namo 'stu te

O Tulasé-devé, I offer my respectful obeisances unto you.


Kindly forgive me if I have caused you pain by picking your
leaves and O mother of the universe.

Do not pluck tulasé leaves in the morning before daylight or in the evening
after dark, nor at any time on Dvädaçé-téthi, the day following Ekädaçé. Even if
the tulasé leaves have become dry because they were cut on the previous day or
in the morning, they may still be used in Deity worship.
