“The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge.”

Dan is a male who resides in Morong, Rizal. He is single, a Grade 12 student of
Teresa NHS-SHS STEM Strand and will soon graduate Senior High School. Dan is
happy with his experiences as a Senior High School so far. His family supports his
finances just to get through with his goals.
Old vs. New
According to Dan, they have two specialized subjects which are Chemistry and
Physics respectively and their teachers usually have presentations to provide which is in
accordance to the curriculum guide and they see it as an effective way, enough to
capture the attention of the students. As indicated by Dan, that strategy, compared to
student to book interaction that is too common strategy. Moreover, it is like not too easy
for the students to learn the lesson using that old strategy compared to the new,
modernized one, where they can visualize the topic more rather than just reading it
between the lines. That new strategy was able enlighten them to understand the topics
being discussed.
No Dependence in Books
As mentioned by Dan, Mr. Salangsang, their Physics Teacher, is a practical
instructor who does not depend on using books so the issue of inadequacy in books
was not a big deal because their teacher used typically knowledge and skills to teach
his students rather than depending on the books. For instance, regarding their lesson
about velocity, their teacher let them walk to understand the lesson. But there is also a
difference between Physics and Chemistry subject. Ms. Sto. Domingo, their Chemistry
Teacher utilized numerous activities in order to make them understand the topic
furthermore e.g. lesson about viscosity.
According to him, the status of learning materials used in STEM Strand was not
okay. This is due to that inadequacy or lacking of books on specialized subjects. As the
Technological Age emerged, some of the students like Dan usually watch some tutorials
on a social media site called,
“YouTube” and through the help of this platform, students like Dan can actually
study their lessons in particular specialized subjects on their own even though there is
the issue in adequacy of learning materials (books).
He pointed out that there was a mentor from other country that uploads all the
videos related to specific subject, and this is like you’re in a typical classroom setup
which himself could learn through watching. While watching on that site about tutorial of
specific topic, which is like a one-on-one lesson with a tutor. So, as a result, with the
help of the gadgets, they were able to understand the topic and it also serves as an
alternative source of academic information. What’s best here is that, in just a span of
ten minutes, he was able to learn things those were unclear. It is really a big help
because for him, he is not comprehensive enough while alone reading the books.
As the result of having inadequacy in Learning Materials, they tend to share even
it is unfair. The lucky ones have the full-access to learn because they have books on
their hands, while the unfortunates suffer from sharing and looking for some access to
learn. There are systems you may use in order to overcome this inadequacy, and one of
that is to just maximize the use of the photocopies from the only books provided to the
class.
As stated by Dan, the course he is going to take has relation to Physics subject
and it is practical. Honestly speaking, Dan is curious about machineries and in order to
supply that curiosity, he tend to watch a video that is connected to machineries in order
to have a clear view of what he is going to encounter in college especially in Physics.
He wanted to explore the field of Physics rather than understanding Chemistry.
Results of the Cause
According to Dan, the aura of the teacher has the greater impact even the topic
is good enough to understand by the students. The students nowadays like this kind of
teachers; the one who can be as their friend, they don’t like the terror teacher to cut it
short.
Daniel had a wide perspective on reason why the allocation of books is getting
thinner and thinner. It is because they want to test the determination of the students to
learn even if there is an inadequacy. To test also the elicit desire to learn even that there
is a hurdles in learning system. He stated also that having no books at hand is like
getting through it without a plan, because books serves as a manual through start
something. Having no books made your knowledge been outlined and the right
sequence of study guide had been randomized. Considering the fact that the internet
completely dominates compare to books; the author’s qualification is a must which is
only found through published books. But, he prefer internet usage.
Through filtering out information that he gather from other sources than books.
First of all, he checked who uploaded the video with those information.
The advantage of having the inadequacy of learning materials is to teach the students
to be resourceful enough to gather information through various resources.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of it is, it made the students’ learning sequence
unstructured that leads most of the students, to confusion.
