18. (a) An element has an atomic number of 15. Use the Periodic Table to name this
element and give its symbol.

Phosphorus, P

(b) Explain why

(i) this element is placed in Group 15 of the Periodic Table.

It has five valence electrons.

(ii) the ion of this element has a charge of 3–.

P is a non-metal, and will gain three electrons to obtain a noble gas


configuration (octet structure), hence forming P3–.

(c) Draw a dot-and-cross diagram to show the chemical bonds present in the
compound formed between this element and magnesium.
(d) State and explain two physical properties that are likely to be exhibited by the
compound formed in (c).

Mg3P2 is an ionic compound.

Any 2 of these physical properties:

• It conducts electricity only in molten or aqueous state as the lattice


is broken down and ions are mobile (and can act as charge
carriers).

• High melting and boiling point as large amount of energy is


required to overcome the strong electrostatic forces of attraction
between oppositely charged ions.

• Hard because ionic bonds are strong and non-directional.

• Brittle because the ordered arrangement of oppositely charged


ions can be easily dislocated when shear stress is applied causing
similarly charged ions to be brought closed together, causing
repulsion and fracture of crystal lattice.

19. Caffeine is a stimulant and is naturally found in coffee beans and tea. The melting
point of caffeine is 238oC. The structural formula of caffeine is shown below.

(a) Give the names of the elements present in caffeine.

(b) Give two reasons why caffeine is a compound and not a mixture.

- Caffeine has a fixed and constant melting point of 238 oC.


- The elements present in caffeine are in fixed composition.
- The elements present in caffeine have very different
properties from that of caffeine.
- When caffeine is formed from its elements, heat energy is
involved.
- Caffeine cannot be separated into its elements by physical
methods.

20. An unidentified substance M was thought to be one of the following three


substances.

Given separate samples of M and the three substances A, B and C, describe what
a student can do to determine the identity of M.

He can mix M with each of the three substances A, B and C separately.

Then heat each mixture and determine the melting point of each mixture.

For the mixture that melted at a fixed and constant temperature as the
melting point of A, B or C, M will be that substance.
