Power System Protection

This document contains an assignment with questions related to protective relays and fault protection systems. It is divided into three parts. Part I contains basic questions about types of faults, effects of faults, and the function of protective systems. Part II contains calculations of operating times for overcurrent relays given fault currents and relay settings. Part III involves short descriptions of the tripping mechanism of relays and the working principle of thermal relays.

Assignment

Total Marks: 30
Part I

1) Write down the name of types of faults. 2

2) What are the effects of faults? 3
3) Can Protective relays prevent faults? 2
4) Describe the function of protective system 3

Part II
1) The current rating of an over current relay is 5 A. The relay has a plug setting of 150%
and Time Multiplier Setting of 0.4. The CT ration is 400/5. Determine the operating time of
relay for a fault current of 6000A. At TMS=1, operating time at various PSM are given
below: 2
PSM 2 4 5 8 10 20
Operating 10 5 4 3 2.8 2.4
Time in
second

2) Two relays R1 and R2 are connected in two sections of a feeder as shown in Fig. CTs
are of ratio 1000/5 A. The plug setting of relay R 1 is 100% and R2 is 125%. The
operating time characteristics of the relays is same given below. The time multiplier
setting of the relay R 1 is 0.3. The time grading scheme has a discriminative time margin
of 0.5 s between the relays. A three-phase short circuit at F results in a fault current of
5000 A. Find the actual operating times of R 1 and R2.
What is the time multiplier setting (TMS) of R2? 3

PSM 2 4 5 8 10 20
Operating 10 5 4 3 2.8 2.4
Time in
second

3) A 20 MVA transformer, which may be called upon to operate at 25% overload, feeds
11-kV bus-bar through a circuit breaker; other circuit breakers supply outgoing feeders.
The transformer circuit breaker is equipped with 1000/5 A CTs and the feeders circuit
breakers with 500/5A CTs and all sets of CTs feed induction type over current relays. The
relays on the feeder circuit breakers have a 125% plug setting and a 0.4 time setting. If a
three phase fault current of 7500A flows from the transformer to one of the feeders, find
the operating time of the feeder relay, the minimum plug setting of the transformer relay,
and its time setting assuming a discriminative time margin of 0.5 second. The
time–current characteristics of the relay is given below: 5

Part III
Case Study

1) Describe the tripping mechanism of relay with working principle. 5

2) Describe how thermal relay is working? 5
