A chef’s knife, also known as a cook's knife, is a cutting


tool used in food preparation. It was originally designed
primarily to slice and disjoint large cuts of beef. Today it is
the primary general-utility knife for most western cooks. A
modern chef's knife is a multi-purpose knife designed to
perform well at many differing kitchen tasks, rather than
excelling at any one in particular. It can be used for
mincing, slicing, and chopping vegetables, slicing meat,
and disjointing large cuts.

A cleaver is a large knife that varies in its shape but


usually resembles a rectangular-bladed hatchet. It is
largely used as a kitchen or butcher knife intended for
hacking through bone. The knife's broad side can also be
used for crushing in food preparation. They are primarily
used for cutting through thin or soft bones and sinew. With
a chicken, for example, it can be used to chop through the
bird's thin bones or to separate ribs.

Bread knives are used for cutting bread and are one of


many kitchen knives used by chefs. The serrated blades
of bread knives are able to cut soft bread without crushing
it.
A weighing scale (or weighing balance) is a device to
measure weight or mass.

A measuring cup or measuring jug is a kitchen utensil used


primarily to measure the volume of liquid or bulk
solid cooking ingredients such as flour and sugar, especially for
volumes from about 50 mL upwards. Measuring cups are also
used to measure washing powder, liquid detergents and bleach
for clothes washing. The cup will usually have a scale marked in
cups and fractions of a cup, and often with fluid measure and
weight of a selection of dry foodstuffs.

A cutting or chopping board is a


durable board on which to place material for cutting.
The kitchen cutting board is commonly used in preparing food.
Kitchen cutting boards are often made of wood or plastic and
come in various widths and sizes. There are also cutting boards
made of glass, steel, or marble, which are easier to clean than
wooden or plastic ones such as nylon or corian, but tend to
damage knives due to their hardness.

A spatula is a broad, flat, flexible


blade used to mix, spread and lift material including foods,
drugs, plaster and paints.

Tongs are a type of tool used to grip and lift objects instead of


holding them directly with hands Tongs for grilling, tongs for
serving salad or spaghetti are kitchen utensil of the same
type. They provide a way to move, rotate and turn the food with delicate precision, or fetch a
full serving in one grab.

A kitchen stove, often called simply a stove or a cooker, is


a kitchen appliance designed for the purpose of cooking food.
Kitchen stoves rely on the application of direct heat for the
cooking process and may also contain an oven, used
for baking. "Cookstoves" (also called "cooking stoves" or "wood
stoves") are heated by burning wood or charcoal; "gas stoves"
are heated by gas; and "electric stoves" by electricity. A stove
with a built-in cooktop is also called a range.

A blender is a kitchen and laboratory appliance used to mix, purée,


or emulsify food and other substances. A stationary blender consists
of a blender jar with a rotating metal blade at the bottom, powered by
an electric motor in the base. Some powerful models can also crush
ice. The newer immersion blender configuration has a motor on top
connected by a shaft to a rotating blade at the bottom, which can be
used with any container.

An oven is a thermally insulated chamber used for


the heating, baking, or drying of a substance, and most commonly
used for cooking.  Foods normally cooked in this manner
include meat, casseroles and baked goods such as bread, cake and
other desserts. In modern times, the oven is used to cook and heat
food in many households across the globe. Ovens usually can use a
variety of methods to cook. The most common may be to heat the
oven from below. This is commonly used for baking and roasting.
