The two maps show how the town of Lakeside developed over a ten-year period from 2000 to
2009. Overall, the town became more urbanised during this period, as well as losing some of its
original features.
The most striking change was the loss of two residential areas in the west and south of the town.
The first of these was turned into a shopping centre, while the second was demolished to make
way for an extension to the industrial complex in the south east. This complex also replaced a
large area of woodland, in which the lake became a small pond.
In the northern part of Lakeside, the derelict warehouses and old town were pulled down. They
were replaced by a car park, offices and a new university. Finally, a multi-screen cinema was
built on the site of the old arts centre in the west of the town, and the school was converted into
newer schools, slightly closer to the river.
The only part of Lakeside that did not change was the large residential area situated in the north
east of the town.

A New Hypermarket for The City Of Pellington
IELTS Writing Task 1 - Sample
The map below shows three proposed sites for a new hypermarket (A, B and C) in the
city of Pellington.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main
features and making comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
There are three proposed sites in Pellington shown in the map where a new hypermarket is going
to be built.
As can be seen, the population in Pellington is 120,000 which is quite a large city. Hence, there
is a need to carefully select which area is the most suitable.
Firstly, site A seems to have the largest residential area in the region with a traffic-free zone and
a medium sized park situated in the middle. Moreover, the industrial area in site A is also the
largest compared to the same areas in site B and C.
Next, considering site B which is on the east side of site A, around 80% of site B is countryside
and the rest is for industries. There is a long and straight motorway dividing site A and B from
the north to the south.
Finally, let us consider site C. Site C has the second largest residential area in Pellington and
there is an airport on the west side.
Site A and C are separated by a long railway which is close to the traffic-free zone of site A.

The Development Of The Village Chorleywood
IELTS Writing Task 1 - Sample
Chorleywood is a village near London whose population has increased steadily since
the middle of the 19th century. The map below shows the development of the village.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the development of the village.
The map shows the growth of a village called Chorleywood between 1868 and 1994.
It is clear that the village grew as the transport infrastructure was improved. Four periods of
development are shown on the map, and each of the populated areas is near to the main roads,
the railway or the motorway.
From 1868 to 1883, Chorleywood covered a small area next to one of the main roads.
Chorleywood Park and Golf Course is now located next to this original village area. The village
grew along the main road to the south between 1883 and 1922, and in 1909 a railway line was
built crossing this area from west to east. Chorleywood station is in this part of the village.
The expansion of Chorleywood continued to the east and west alongside the railway line until
1970. At that time, a motorway was built to the east of the village, and from 1970 to 1994,
7
further development of the village took place around motorway intersections with the railway
and one of the main roads.

The maps below illustrate how Frenton changed from 1990 to 2012
Sample Answer:
The maps show the developments that have taken place in Frenton over a period of 22 years
between 1990 and 2012.

It is clear that Frenton underwent a dramatic transformation over the period, becoming
noticeably less green and more built up.
The only places that remained the same in Frenton over the period were the school and the
library. The playing fields in the south of the town , for example, were replaced with flats.
Secondly, the houses in the west of Frenton were also made larger and factories were constructed
on the site. Furthermore, the café and the park east of High Street made way for a hotel and golf
course , while the theatre and shops became a cinema and supermarket, respectively.
The bank, located west of High Street and north of the school , was converted into a restaurant
and the trees in the southwest of the town were cut down to make way for a technopark. One
further development was the expansion of the hospital, located west of the High Street.

The maps show the transformation of the village of Eastminster over a ten year period.

The maps show changes that took place in the town of Eastminster between the years
1999 and 2009.
It is clear that Eastminster became more urbanised with less open spaces over the
decade.
North of the river, which divides the town, the woodland in the northwest was turned into
an adventure park. Moreover, by 2009 the large house with gardens had been replaced
with a hotel and a golf course. More houses were also built encroaching on the park in
the northeast. The other main development north of the river was the relocation of the
school from the south bank of the river.
The area south of the river experienced greater urbanisation. To the east, the streets of
houses were demolished to make way for blocks of flats. By 2009, where a public
garden stood south of the old streets of houses, there were more houses. Further
developments that occurred were the construction of factories and warehouses along
the railway line together with the conversion of the school on the river into a new
shopping complex. The final transformation was the expansion of the hospital west of
the old school situated on the river. (199 words)

The three maps show Palm Grove is a coastal town about 450 kilometres
from the nearest city. It has recently become a major resort.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features,
and make comparisons where relevant.
The three maps representing changes in Palm Grove between 1950 and 2000 show
that the town became a resort as accessibility form the outside improved.
In 1950, Palm Grove was a small fishing village with few hotels. It lies 450 kilometres
from the nearest city. Since the only access to the village in 1950 was by a two-lane
road, most tourists probably didn't want to make the long trip to get there.
By 1975, a new four-lane high way had brought changes to Palm Grove. It was still a
fishing village, but it appears that the new road made it easier for tourists to get there.
Several new hotels had been built for them along the beach.
By 2000, an airport had been built just outside Palm Grove. This apparently changed
the town into resort. The hotel district was greatly expanded and the fishing docks
removed. Probably most local residents now work in the tourist industry. (156 words)
