OVERVIEW OF THE MODULE:


This module deals with introducing learners to be
literate about the different kinds of media that exist and
how kinds of media industries that own, operate, and
control these media technologies. In this lesson, the
learners will also learn how each media product is made in
order to fully understand how the message embedded in it
is relayed from the creator to its target audience. As a tool
for mass communication, specific media products
developed into a necessary device that helped deliver a
specific message to many people. As an outlet of creativity,
some media products are used by artists to exercise their
freedom of expression. This lesson will certainly develop
learners’ attention, creativity, critical thinking and
awareness in using the social media.

1. How would you inform of anything now?
By conversing a particular topic, the simplest way of informing others without using
gadgets to spread such news and using traditional media.
2. What ways would you have to communicate with one another?
Using traditional media, we can communicate with each other by the letters and
simply a communication verbally by actually meeting one another face to face.
3. How would you share information and communicate news and events?
Using traditional media to share information and communicate news and events.
Traditional media of communication is the form or means people in rural settings use
in passing across information . The yesteryear’s traditional media includes the town
crier, oral tradition, talking drum, smoke signals, ivory horn and long brass, the open
market, music/lyrics, festival, drama amongst others. Please, read verbal and non

4. What would you personally miss most in such a situation?
Life without gadgets/internet is pretty hard to comprehend. We use it for virtually
everything in our lives, even for connecting with those around us. So, what would
happen if the gadgets/internet suddenly disappeared?
What I personally miss most in such situation is waking up every morning and start
my routine which, for most of us, includes catching up on our newsfeed in FB, IG and
twitter. Whether this is about my family, friends, celebrities, sports, or current events,
it usually begins on my smartphone or my laptop. That is my personal opinion, what’s
yours?
5. What would society lose in such situation?
What would society lose if we didn’t have the gadgets/internet? The way we take in
news and information has been impressively quick thanks to the internet. Without it,
we’d rely on TV programs, newspapers (yes, actual newspapers), and, worst of all,
word of mouth.

yourself in a discussion about examining and believing in news. These are the

1. Did you believe these news items were true? How did you know they were
true/false?
At first, looks are very deceiving. It could possibly catch up our attention by the
way the headline news is being formatted. “FACT CHECKING” is the most
advisable task for intented audience like us. When in doubt, fact check the
information that you read!
2. Are all news and information on the Internet true? Why or Why not?
NO, because of the freedom of speech being passed into law. Freedom of speech
is the concept of human right to voice one’s opinion publicly without fear of
censorship or punishment. Everyone is entitled to speak up regarding on such
issues the society is facing and we are free to express ourselves in social media
regardless on how the status of our information, if our information is true or
misleading.
3. Who gets to post news items online? expound?
Everyone is entitled to speak up regarding on such issues the society is facing

4. As a student, how can you avert fake news in your community?
As producers and consumers of information, you must display the ability to
evaluate the kind of information you access and share. This ability is known as
critical thinking. Being critical means being capable of judging the merit of
something based on certain standards or parameters. The ability to determine
factual and that of fake news.

LITERACY. The ability to identify, understand, interpret,


create, communicate, and compute, using printed and written
materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a
continuum of learning, wherein individuals can achieve their
goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and participate
fully in their community and wider society.

MEDIA. The physical objects used to communicate with, or


the mass communication through physical objects such as
radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to any
physical object used to communicate messages.

MEDIA LITERACY. The ability to access, analyze,


evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms. It aims to
empower citizens by providing them with the competencies
(knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional
media and new technologies.

INFORMATION. A broad term that covers processed data,


knowledge derived from study, experience, instruction, signals
or symbols.

INFORMATION LITERACY. The ability to recognize when


information is needed, and to locate, evaluate, and effectively
communicate information in its various formats.

TECHNOLOGY LITERACY. The ability of an individual,


either working independently or with others, to responsibly,
appropriately, and effectively use technological tools. Using
these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate,
evaluate, create and communicate information.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY. The essential


skills and competencies that allow individuals to engage with
media and other information providers effectively, as well as
develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize
and become active citizens.

Being a media and literate individual, this entails recognizing,
acknowledging, and managing our exposure to media and information. A
