Welcome to the Mathematics 4 Module on Solving non-routine problems


involving multiplication of whole numbers including money using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

• This is an example of non – routine problem.
• Non-routine problem can be solved without using the
standard procedures. Some of the strategies that can be
used are the following:
a. Drawing a picture
b. Using number line
c. Listing/table method
d. Acting out
e. Guess and check

Activity 1: Practice
Directions: Read and solve the problems. Show your solution.
1. The volunteers are packing goods for the families in a
quarantined barangay. If they are instructed to put exactly
12 canned goods for each pack, how many canned goods are
there if they produced 125 packs?

2. A box of sardines contains 36 cans. How many cans of


sardines did Aling Rosa take home for her sari – sari store if
she bought 3 boxes?

Activity 2: Keep Practicing


Directions: Answer the given problems.
1. What is the total amount of the tiles in the word HOPE if a
tile cost Php45.00?
2. Sheila is having a party. She ordered kiddie tables that can
sit 2 children. How many children can sit in 10 kiddie tables
placed end to end?

Activity 3: Test Yourself


Direction: Read and solve the given problem.
1. Sheila placed 12 cookies in a baking pan. If she has 12 baking
pans, how many cookies can she bake?

2. Nena bought an album with 36 pages. If she can put 6


pictures in one page, how many pictures does she need to fill
the whole album?

Non-routine problems are problems that not uses standard procedure. These
are problems that can be solved in different ways and variety of strategies.
