2 SAFETY

The following symbols are used in this manual where appropriate:

The WARNING safety symbol

THIS INTRODUCES DIRECTIVES, PROCEDURES OR PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES WHICH
MUST BE EXECUTED OR FOLLOWED. FAILURE TO OBEY A WARNING CAN RESULT IN
INJURY TO THE OPERATOR OR THIRD PARTIES.

The CAUTION safety symbol

This draws the operator's attention to information, directives or procedures which must be

discharges.
Refer to Handling Precautions for Electrostatic Sensitive Devices.

2.1 Handling Precautions for Electrostatic Sensitive Devices

Certain devices used in electronic equipment can be damaged by electrostatic discharges resulting from built-up
static electricity. Because of this, special precautions must be taken to minimize or eliminate the possibility of these
electrostatic discharges occurring.

6 Read the following recommendations carefully before handling electronic

circuits, printed circuit boards or modules containing electronic
components.

➢ Before handling electronic circuits, discharge the static electricity from your body by touching and
momentarily holding a grounded metal object (e.g. a pipe or cabinet).

➢ Avoid the build-up of static electricity on your body by not wearing synthetic clothing material, as these
tend to generate and store static electric charges. Cotton or cotton blend materials are preferred because
they do not store static electric charges.

➢ Do not handle electronic circuits unless it is absolutely necessary. Only hold modules by their front panel
handles.

➢ Do not touch printed circuit boards, their connectors or their components with conductive devices or with
your hands.

➢ Put the electronic circuit, printed circuit board or module containing electronic components into an antistatic
protective bag immediately after removing it from the system rack.

7 Modbus RTU communication (PPT-380 only)

7.1 Introduction
The PPT-380 integrates a Modbus slave protocol able to provide some information about the sensor itself and some
calculated values based on the current measure. The physical configuration is fixed as follow:
Parameter Value
Baud rate 115200 bps
Parity None
Data bits 8
Stop bit 1
Flow control none

Additionally an internal 120Ω termination resistor can be activated by the user in the MCm Sensors Manager. This
setting is stored in the non-volatile memory of the sensor and therefore remains valid even after a power shut down.

7.2 Configuration of the Modbus

The only Modbus parameter that can be changed is the Modbus slave ID as described below:
Parameter Default value User range
Modbus slave ID 1 1 to 247 (decimal)

In order to change the current Modbus slave ID, just enter the new value in the specific field of the MCm Sensors
Manager and upload the configuration into the sensor. Once the new ID is sent to the PPT-380, the MCm Sensors
Manager automatically changes its own settings to continue communicating with the sensor.
15
7.3 Calculated values
The PPT-380 sensor samples the measured range at 10kS/s or 1kS/s (configurable) and processes the calculated
values by bloc of 8192 samples as illustrated below:

Therefore all the calculated values are updated every 0.82 seconds with 10kS/s sampling rate or 8.2 seconds with
1kS/s. The available calculated values are listed below:
Input register Name Description
address
0 Sensor type 1 = PPT-280, 2 = PPT-380, 3 = PPT-480
1 Sensor S/N Serial number of the senor. The read value must be
divided by 1000 to get the formatted serial number.
Example: 16412 corresponds to the s/n 16.412.
2 Gap Averaged value of the measured signal given in [um]

06.08.2018 Modbus RTU communication (PPT-380 only)

PPT-280 / PPT-380 / PPT-480 User manual

3 Peak Peak value of the measured signal given in [um]. (see

drawing above for details)
4 Peak – peak Peak-peak value of the measured signal given in
[um]. (see drawing above for details)
5 Temperature Internal temperature of the sensor given in [°C]
6 Self-check Value is 1 if the sensor self-check is successful and
0 if not. (not implemented yet)
7 Alarm level Value is 1 if the sensor is in alarm state (if configured)
and 0 if the alarm criteria is not reached.

All the calculated values are available only by Modbus at a specific address for each value as detailed in the table
above. Each calculated value is available in the Input Register of the sensor in 16-bit unsigned integer format (u16)
with the LSB corresponding to 1 um.

7.4 Trend values on MCm Sensors Manager

The MCm Sensors Manager allows to monitor the calculated values in a graphical manner for information or
commissioning. All the calculated values are available on the same plot as shown below:

16

A maximum of 4 hour is recorded in the MCm Sensors Manager. The plot can be held at any time by clicking on
the hold button. X and Y scales can be auto-scaled to the current values by clicking on the individual scaling button
(G for gap, D for displacement, T for temperature). Additionally the user can zoom on the trend by selecting the
zoom button.

When the user has performed a zoom-in on the plot, the system automatically holds. Then clicking on the play
button resume the zoom function and continue trending.

7.5 Configuration of the alarm output

The PPT-380 sensor has a voltage output that can be configured to handle alarm detection based on the calculated
values described in the previous section. If the alarm detection is activated, the user has to select which of the
calculated value is monitored and specify a threshold level.

Once the alarm function is activated, a parameter value has to be selected to be monitored. According to this the
user can specify either one or two threshold values. The output goes in alarm state depending on the configuration
as detailed below:
Alarm source Alarm condition
None No alarm is performed. The analog output gives a voltage
proportional to the measured distance.
Gap The gap value of the last bloc is outside of the range specified by
“Gap Max” and “Gap Min”. Limits are specified in um.
Peak The peak value of the last bloc is above the “Displ. Peak Max”
specified in um.
Peak-Peak The peak value of the last bloc is above the “Displ. PeakPeak
Max” specified in um.

The alarm condition is evaluated at each new acquisition block, therefore the update rate for the alarm output is
0.82 seconds with 10kS/s or 8.2 second with 1kS/s.

18
8.2 Long wiring recommendation
The PPT-280 / PPT-380 / PPT-480 are supplied with a 10m shielded cable. In installation where an additional cable
is used to extend the wiring it is strongly recommended to take care about the following points:
1) Connect the shield wire and 0V to the installation earth at the end of the sensor cable
2) With the PPT-380, if both alarm/signal output and Modbus RTU are used then run the Modbus wires
separately of the others wire to avoid cross coupling due to high frequency

8.3 Grounding recommendation

Special care must be taken for system grounding during the sensor installation. An
incorrect sensor grounding might conduct to noisy or wrong results, therefore it is
strongly recommended to respect the wiring rules below.

1) To avoid ground loop between the sensor head and the cable shield or the power supply, the sensor body is
entirely isolated. Therefore no specific action is needed to isolate the sensor body from the machine.
2) Due to point 1), if the sensor is installed in a very electrically disturbed machine, the outputs of the sensor
might be affected. For such cases, it is recommended to short the sensor head isolation by connecting a
ground wire between the sensor body and the power supply 0V. Care must then be taken to not create a
ground loop between the power supply unit and the machine.
3) The shield of the sensor cable is not connected to the sensor, therefore it is necessary to connect it to the
installation ground or the power supply 0V thanks to the clear wire available at the end of the cable.
4) The optional protective tube has a metallic core connected to the sensor body, therefore the opposite side of
the protective tube must be left floating to avoid ground loops.

9 Installation

For adequate sensor installation, please make sure that:

• The area of vibration is clearly identified,
• The mounting support is properly designed against any adverse ambient conditions or disturbances and
is rigid and immune against surrounding movements,
• The measuring race is free of scratches, holes or protruding elements,
• The sensor position is approximatively position in the middle range of the reading distance from target,
• The target facing the proximity probe is made up of conductive material,
• The physical needed measuring range is within the sensor measuring range,
• The target surface is at least 3x the sensor tip surface.

9.1 Mounting support

IMPORTANT: Use of isolation sleeve or isolated mounting support is not necessary, as the sensor head is
electrically isolated. The sensor must be properly grounded according to chapter Error! Reference source not f
ound..

The following picture shows typical example of sensor installation and support:

19

Example of support

To prevent cross-feed between any two probes mounted in the same vicinity, at least 25 mm (1 inch) spacing
between the probe tips should be maintained:

Min 25mm

PPT-280 / PPT-380 / PPT-480 User manual

9.2 Mounting procedure

The sensor mounting procedure is the following:
• Position the proximity probe, the mounting support and the cable on the machine.
• Optimise the orientation of the transducer and cable path (don’t bend the cable with a radius below 50
mm).
• Fix the mounting bracket using the specific screws.
• Insert the proximity probe sensor through the M10 x 1 thread of the bracket and fix it using the M10 bolt
delivered with the transducer. The distance between the shaft and the probe tip must be in the middle
range of sensor measuring range.
• Secure the mounting using fixing glue (for example LOCTITE 221). This glue blocks the screws but not
too much so they can be dismantled later if required.

10 Functional test of proximity system

10.1 Testing procedure with PPT-990 (valid of all sensors)

• Connect the sensor to PPT-990 and check the communication with the software sensor manager. If the
communication is available, the sensor works properly.

10.2 Testing procedure without PPT-990

PPT-280

• Connect the power supply according to sensor specification;

• Move a metallic target in front of the sensor tip and measure the corresponding voltage output in function
of the target displacement.
