    news item 8: EARTHQUAKE I

    At least 5,000 people are estimated to have died and thousands of others to have been injured in a destructive
    earthquake which devastated large areas of Ishmad. This small mountainous country is prone to seismic
    disturbances as it lies on a seismological fault. This tragedy proved particularly calamitous and the still incomplete
    statistics speak of unprecedented damage. The high magnitude quake measured 7.7 on the Richter scale and
    was the strongest this area has experienced in more than a century. It followed a fortnight of tremors and its
    epicentre was some 150 miles southwest of Zento, the Ishmadic capital. Three small villages, close to the
    epicentre, are said to have been completely wiped out. The quake also triggered devastating landslides which
    destroyed a power station, deprivina one-third of the country of electricity. No aftershocks were reported.

    At two in the morning, two strong quakes, thirty minutes apart, rocked the capital, catching the inhabitants in their
    sleep and leaving homes badly damaged. Those who did not immediately leave the affected area paid for it with
    their lives. Hundreds of bodies lie buried under the ruins and the death toll mounts as rescue workers dig into the
    mounds of debris to find those entombed.

    With half the city reduced to rubble, most of its surviving inhabitants have been left
    homeless. Hardest hit were the badly-constructed high-rise apartment blocks, built of precast
    concrete slabs, which have sprung up in recent years. They were the first to collapse on their
    occupants and they are now being blamed for the high death toll as there are few which
    withstood the tremors. Many schools and hospitals disintegrated as the earth heaved. Other
    buildings were gutted by fire from ruptured gas pipes and a pall of smoke still hangs over the
    town. All the structurally damaged buildings will have to be razed. It is now predicted that,
    even after years of reconstructive work, Zento will never look the same again.

    8. CUTREMUR 1

    Se estimează că cel puțin 5.000 de oameni au murit și alte mii de persoane au fost rănite într-
    un cutremur distructiv care a devastat suprafețe mari din Ishmad. Această mică țară muntoasă
    este predispusă la tulburări seismice, întrucât se află pe o falie seismologică. Această tragedie
    s-a dovedit deosebit de dezastruoasa și statisticile încă incomplete vorbesc despre daune fără
    precedent. Cutremurul de magnitudine ridicata a măsurat 7,7 grade pe scara Richter și a fost
    cel mai puternic pe care l-a cunoscut această zonă în mai bine de un secol. Au urmat doua
    săptămâni de tremuraturi/cutremure, iar epicentrul său se afla la aproximativ 150 de mile sud-
    vest de Zento, capitala Ishmad-ului. Se spune că trei sate mici, aproape de epicentru, au fost
    șterse complet. Cutremurul a declanșat, de asemenea, alunecări de teren devastatoare care au
    distrus o centrală, lasand o treime din țara fara electricitate. Nu au fost raportate replici.

    La două dimineața, două cutremure puternice, la treizeci de minute distanță, au zguduit


    capitala, prinzând locuitorii în somn și lăsând casele puternic prejudiciate. Cei care nu au
    părăsit imediat zona afectată au plătit-o cu viața lor. Sute de cadavre sunt îngropate sub ruine
    și numărul decedatilor creste în timp ce salvatorii sapă în movilele de daramaturi pentru a-i
    găsi pe cei îngropati.
    Cu jumătate din oraș sub daramaturi, majoritatea locuitorilor supraviețuitori au rămas fără
    adăpost. Cele mai lovite au fost blocurile de apartamente înalte, construite din plăci de beton
    prefabricate, care au apărut în ultimii ani. Ei au fost primii care s-au prăbușit pe ocupanții lor
    și acum sunt acuzați de numărul mare de decese, deoarece sunt puține persoane care au
    rezistat cutremurelor. Multe școli și spitale s-au dezintegrat pe măsură ce pământul se clatina.
    Alte clădiri au fost spintecate de foc din cauza conductelo de gaz rupte și un val de fum
    planeaza încă peste oraș. Toate clădirile deteriorate structural vor trebui demolate. Se prezice
    acum că, chiar și după ani de muncă reconstructivă, Zento nu va mai arăta niciodata la fel.
