TEST 1

NMB10203 MATERIALS ENGINEERING

7 SEPT 2020
DURATION: 1 HOUR

Question 1

a) List the four main classes of engineering materials. Use your own experience to rank
them approximately:
a. By strength.
b. By hardness
(4 marks)

b) We would like to produce a transparent canopy for an aircraft. If we were to use a ceramic
(that is, traditional window glass) canopy, rocks or birds might cause it to shatter. Design
a material that would minimize damage or at least keep the canopy from breaking into
pieces.
(5 marks)

Question 2

a) Define the terms lattice, unit cell, and crystal structure.

(6 marks)

b) A metal has a cubic structure with a density of 2.6 g/cm3, an atomic weight of 87.62 g/mol,
and a lattice parameter of 6.0849 A˚. One atom is associated with each lattice point.
Determine the crystal structure of the metal.
(5 marks)

c) Determine the Miller indices for the directions A, B and C in the cubic unit cell shown in
Figure 1.

(6 marks)
d) Sketch the following planes and directions within a cubic unit cell:

(i) [11̅0]
̅̅̅̅1]
(ii) [22
(ii) [410]
(6 marks)

Question 3

a) Why is it that cross slip in BCC and FCC metals is easier than that in HCP metals?
How does this influence the ductility of BCC, FCC, and HCP metals?
(3 marks)

b) Tin atoms are introduced into a FCC copper crystal, producing an alloy with a lattice
parameter of 3.7589 x 10-8 cm and a density of 8.772 g/cm3. Calculate the atomic
percentage of tin present in the alloy.
