UNIT- I
1. a) Explain the atomic bonding mechanisms with examples. CO1 (12)
b) Explain the important properties of polymers, metals and ceramic CO1 (08)
materials.

2. a) Define composites. How are they classified? CO1 (08)


b) List the different processing techniques of ceramics. Explain anyone CO1 (07)
with a neat sketch
c) “Properties of polycrystalline materials are more often isotropic”. CO1 (05)
Justify.

UNIT- II
3. a) With flow chart briefly explain powder metallurgy process. CO2 (10)
b) What are the different methods of production of powders and explain CO2 (05)
any one process with a neat sketch.
c) Write a note on applications of powder metallurgy. CO2 (05)

4. a) List the advantages and limitations of powder metallurgy process. CO2 (10)
b) With a neat sketch explain Hot Isostatic compaction process. CO2 (05)
c) Discuss the characteristics of metal powders used in powder CO2 (05)
metallurgy.

UNIT- III
5. a) Suggest a method for producing tubular composites. Explain the same CO3 (10)
process with neat sketches.
b) With a neat sketch, describe pultrusion method to fabricate a CO3 (10)
composite part. What are its applications?

6. a) Describe with a sketch: CO3 (10)


(i) Resin transfer moulding
(ii) ultrasonic cutting of composite.
b) What is NDT? What are different methods of NDT technique for CO3 (10)
identifying a defects present in a composite material? Explain anyone
method with a sketch.

UNIT- IV
7. a) List the assumptions made in micromechanical analysis of a lamina. CO4 (04)
b) Obtain an expressions for i)longitudinal young’s modulus ii) Transverse CO4 (16)
Young’s modulus iii) Major poisson’s ratio iv) In- Plane shear modulus
by strength of material approach.

8. a) Write the stiffness and compliance matrix for an isotropic, anisotropic CO4 (09)
and monoclinic.
b) Find the maximum value of S>0 If a stress of σx =2s, σy= -3s and CO4 (11)
xy =4s is applied to the 60 0 lamina of graphite/epoxy. Use Maximum
stress failure theory. Given the properties of a unidirectional
graphite/epoxy lamina as E1=181Gpa, E2=10.30Gpa, y12=0.28,
G12=7.17Gpa.

UNIT- V

b) What are the basic requirements for high temperature materials. CO5 (10)
Explain the mechanism of strengthening and creep resistance of nickel
based super alloys.
