Dance is an expression of an intensified sense of life, arising from an inner

perception that stimulates both mind and body. Not only an individual or group
experience but also a reflection of cultures.

Traditional Dances- More on ceremonial dance. The term ‘Traditional’ is more


frequently used when the emphasis is on the cultural roots of the dance.
 Folk Dance- developed by people that reflect the life of the people of a
certain country or region
Example: Tinikling- originated during the Spanish colonial era

 Ethnic Dance- Dance generated by an ethnic culture which 


expresses the esthetics of a particular culture.

Example: Inagong
A dance for entertainment performed during festivals and gatherings.

PS: Not all ethnic dances are folk dances but all folk dances are ethnic dance

Contemporary Dance- Style of expressive dance that combines elements of


several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.  Strive to
connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

Cheerdance- is choreographed dance combined with gymnastics skills (tumbling,


stunts, jumps, turns and twists).
(Cheerleading- has the same composition but there is a part in the routine where
yells and cheers are done either by the cheer leaders themselves.)

Hiphop/ Modern dance- hiphop music with own interpretation of steps.


Hiphop- street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music
Modern-  broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance, primarily arising out of
Germany and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dancers
own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing.

Social Dance- non-competitive version of ballroom and latin dancing. It is


comprised of all the same dances, like Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, or Cha-Cha, but
designed to be used in practical settings like wedding receptions, nightclubs,
business functions, or informal gatherings.
Festival Dance- cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in
honor of a Patron saint or as a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest.

1. Occupational Dances- depict the lifestyle and daily work of the people living
in various topographies.
Example: Mananagat (cebuanos) mimics fish catching and gathering

2. Courtship Dances- Depict dances with love themes. Allow the dancers to
display their boldness (willing to take risk) and attractiveness and to engage in
socially accepted physical contact between the sexes.
Example: Maramion popular in Bohol and Cebu. A pantomime(drama) of a courtship
story. Females are dressed in Visayan folk costume, in patadyong while males are
dressed in barong tagalog with white trousers.

3. Religious/ Ceremonial Dances- performed in connection with religious vows,


practices and ceremonies. Maybe performed drive away evil spirits, sickness,
favors will be granted and vows fulfilled.
Example: Dugso dance among the Manobo people in Bukidnon, Agusan and
Misamis Oriental . The Dugso (also Dugsu) is usually performed during important
occasions like kaliga (feasts) or kaamulan (tribal gatherings).

4. Game Dances- dances that have some play elements and are for
recreational purposes
Example: Lubi Lubi bicolano dance which is a combination of a simple folk and social
steps. Literally, lubi means coconut.

5. War Dances- to show imaginary combat or duel with the use of fighting
implements like bolo or spear
Example: Sagayan Philippine war dance performed by both the Maguindanao and
Maranao depicting in dramatic fashion the steps their hero, Prince Bantugan, took
upon wearing his armaments, the war he fought in and his subsequent victory
afterwards.
6. Comic Dances- dances with funny and humorous movements mainly for
entertainment.
Example: Kinoton- imitates the movements of person bitten by ants

7. Wedding Dances- Performed by newlyweds, friends and relatives of the


bride and groom.
Example: Soryano- A courtship dance by the Tagbanua people of Palawan where
the men holding cloths frantically pursue and coax the women to face them.  In
response, the ladies playfully turn away to the opposite direction, turning the dance
into a spirited dance of chase.

8. Festival Dances- performed in connections with celebration a feast, a barrio,


fiesta, good harvest and good future.
Example: Putong- (Marindique) Literally, the  word “putong” means to crown, is a
song of thanksgiving, hope and prayer for a long, blessed life. 

Who is Francisca Reyes Aquino?


 MOTHER OF PHILIPPINE DANCING
 Born: March 9 1899, Died: Nov. 21, 1983 age 84
 Job: Filipino folk dancer and cultural researcher

Contribution: received the "Philippine Republic Award of Merit" for her untiring efforts in
collecting, compiling, and propagating folk dances, and for her outstanding contribution to
the advancement of Filipino culture in the field of dance.

Francisca Reyes Aquino is acknowledged as the Folk Dance Pioneer. This


Bulakeña began her research on folk dances in the 1920’s making trips to remote
barrios in Central and Northern Luzon. Her research on the unrecorded forms of
local celebration, ritual and sport resulted into a 1926 thesis titled “Philippine Folk
Dances and Games,” and arranged specifically for use by teachers and playground
instructors in public and private schools.

In the 1940’s, she served as supervisor of physical education at the Bureau of


Education that distributed her work and adapted the teaching of folk dancing as a
medium of making young Filipinos aware of their cultural heritage. In 1954, she
received the Republic Award of Merit given by the late Pres. Ramon Magsaysay for
“outstanding contribution toward the advancement of Filipino culture”, one among the
many awards and recognition given to her

How does literature connects aquinos work?- She made a thesis entitled
Philippine Folk Dances and Games which she specifically arrange it for teachers
and playground instructors use, either be public or private schools. She wants
the young Filipinos or incoming generation to be aware of our rich cultural
heritage
