Workshop Title: Digital Literacy- Locating Resources/Information Effectively

Workshop Description: The purpose of this workshop is for participants to learn the essential Digital
Literacy skills needed to effectively and appropriately use technology to locate and verify information to
enhance the classroom.  

Objectives: 
1. Participants will be able to safely and efficiently use digital technology to find, authenticate, and use
information. 
2. Participants will be able to use digital technology to collaborate and communicate with others and
share knowledge, content, or resources.

• Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a
global and digital society. 
a) Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies
and situations
b) Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to
support student success and innovation
c) Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety
of digital age media and formats 
d) Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and
use information resources to support research and learning

Activities: 
1. Opening (7 minutes): 
 While waiting on all participants, instructor requests present participants to complete survey by
following link provided in chat box.
 Watch a video as a brief introduction.
 Use raise hand tool to answer questions: 
o Have you ever felt like you were searching for ”a needle in a haystack” when
using the digital technology for research purposes?
o Have you witnessed students become frustrated when attempting to complete
research assignments?
o Do you require or request students to use a particular search engine for
assignments?
 Instructor will narrow reiterate focus of workshop: effectively locating resources/information.
 Complete Poll.  

2. Instructor Presentation (8 Minutes): 


 Instructor will move through tips and recommendations for using search engines highlighting what
does and does not effect search results.
 Instructor will focus on identifying and using key words properly.Instructor will interact with
participants for help identifying key words in examples and completing search inquiries. 
 Instructor will present participants with questions.
o Participants will be asked to share what their search entry would be via chat.  
o Instructor/Participants will analyze response. 
o Instructor will share personal search inquiries and the answer to each
highlighting the development of keywords and use of search features.  

Assignments: 
1. Locating Information (5 minutes) : Participants will navigate to the Google a Day and attempt to
answer the three questions of the day using the tips and recommendations from the instructional
segment. Students will be asked to record their performance via screenshot or alternative method. 

2. Collaborative Closing (5 minutes):


 Teachers will share their searching experiences with other participants discussing any noteworthy
discoveries, struggles, etc. that were experienced during this time. In addition, they will share how they
may use their newly acquired searching skills within their classroom. Workshop will end with collaborative
review quiz. 
 What is digital literacy? 
 What was the most challenging during todays workshop? 
 What would you like to know more about? 
 What was your greatest discovery today?  
 What are your other questions that you would like to discuss?  

Workshop Evaluation: 
Evaluation One: Teachers will rate their current query skill level via a survey. 
Evaluation Two: Google A Day Challenge- Participants will complete the Google a Day Challenge and
submit their answer to the instructor. The participant will receive credit for completing the assignment.
Further data will be compiled on accuracy to access the the efficiency of the workshop as well as the
participants mastery. 
Evaluation Three: Teachers will complete review quiz via Quizizz.  
Evaluation Four: Workshop Evaluation. 
Completion of all four evaluation pieces will result in participants receiving 1 credit towards professional
development. 

Instructor/Student Interaction Expectations: 


1. Before the workshop begins, participants should ensure that they have a device with internet
capabilities to bring to the workshop. If any participant does not, an e-mail should be sent to the
instructor so arrangements can be made. 
2. Participants will be expected to participate and contribute in all activities and assignments throughout
the workshop. 
3. Participants are expected to communicate respectfully throughout the workshop.
