Directions: Enumerate a person who contributed peace in the world, and briefly discuss
how.

1. Malala Yousafzai (1997 – )

Is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize
laureate. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women
and children in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan,
where the local Pakistani Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school. Her
advocacy has grown into an international movement, and according to former Pakistani
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, she has become "the most prominent citizen" of

2. Mother Teresa (1910-1997)


In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious
congregation that had over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries in 2012. The
congregation manages homes for people who are dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and
tuberculosis. It also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children's and
family counselling programmes, as well as orphanages and schools. Members take
vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, and also profess a fourth vow – to give
"wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.” Mother Teresa's
accomplishments were that she was known for being a humanitarian and an advocate
for the poor and helpless. She also won  the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, the Pope John
XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, and the Nehru Prize for Promotion of International Peace

3. Henry Dunant (1828-1910)


Henry Dunant (born Jean-Henri Dunant; 8 May 1828 – 30 October 1910), also
known as Henri Dunant, was a Swiss humanitarian, businessman and social activist. He
was the visionary, promoter and co-founder of the Red Cross. In 1901 he received the
first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy, making Dunant the first Swiss
Nobel laureate. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on Dunant's idea for an
independent organisation to care for wounded soldiers. Dunant was the founder of the
Swiss branch of the Young Men's Christian Association YMCA.

4. Nadia Murad Basee Taha (1993 - )


Is an Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist who lives in Germany.In 2014, she was
kidnapped from her hometown Kocho and held by the Islamic State for three months.
Murad is the founder of Nadia's Initiative, an organization dedicated to "helping women
and children victimized by genocide, mass atrocities, and human trafficking to heal and
rebuild their lives and communities".In 2018, she and Denis Mukwege were jointly
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a
weapon of war and armed conflict". She is the first Iraqi and Yazidi to be awarded a

5. Abiy Ahmed (1976 - )
Is an Ethiopian politician serving as 10th Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the 4th
Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since 2 April 2018. He is
the first Oromo chairman of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary. Democratic
Front (EPRDF) from the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP), which is one of the four
coalition parties of the EPRDF. Abiy is also an elected member of the Ethiopian
parliament, and a member of the ODP and EPRDF executive committees. A former
army intelligence officer, since becoming prime minister Abiy has launched a wide
programme of political and economic reforms and worked to broker peace deals in
Eritrea, South Sudan, and a transition agreement in the Republic of the Sudan. Abiy
was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending the 20-year post-war
territorial stalemate between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
