Department of Nutrition Sciences February. 24th , 2020

Level: 2nd year license

Human nutrition deals with the provision of essential nutrients in food

that are necessary to support human life and health. Poor nutrition is a chronic
problem often linked to poverty, food security or a poor understanding of
nutrition and dietary practices. Malnutrition and its consequences are large
contributors to deaths and disabilities worldwide. Good nutrition is necessary for
children to grow physically, and for normal human biological development.

The seven major classes of nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, fiber, minerals,
proteins, vitamins, and water. Nutrients can be grouped as either macronutrients
or micronutrients.

Poor health can be caused by a lack of required nutrients, or for some

vitamins and minerals. Essential nutrients cannot be synthesized by the body,
and must be obtained from food.

Poor eating habits include under- or over-eating, not having enough of

healthy foods we need each day, or consuming too many types of food and
drink, which are low in fiber or high in fat, salt and/or sugar. Poor nutrition can
contribute to stress, tiredness, it can contribute to the risk of developing some
illnesses and other health problems such as: high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, heart disease, type-2 diabetes, some cancers, depression.

To balance your food and protect your health, you should have a good
variety of healthy foods from five food groups each day like (fruits, vegetables,
grains, dairy, and protein) each day. Eat sugary, fatty or salty food only in small
amounts, drink fresh, water instead of sugary drinks, plan your meal with
healthy ingredients, and enjoy cooking and eating healthy food with family or
friends and without distractions such as eating and watching television.
