1.0 Product Description
The 3M™ 2179C Fiber Optic Splice Cases are molded plastic closure for splice
protection in fiber optic cables. They are suitable for buried, underground, aerial, and
pedestals applications.
Note: The closure will accommodate up to four 1.18" (30mm) diameter cables inline
when using two 3M™ 2524 trays. When using two 3M™ 2523, 3M™ 2524 or 3M™
2524-CF trays it limited to four 0.5" (12.5mm) diameter cables inline. Butt applications
will accommodate up to 1.18" (30mm) diameter cables.
* Operation -5 ℃ - +69 ℃
* Storage/shipping -50℃ - +70℃

To predict the long-term performance reliability of the 2179-C Fiber Optic Splice
Case, the cases have been subjected to a number of tests, which expose them to
conditions more severe than anticipated in actual field application. The tests are based
upon telephone industry performance specifications and are believed to represent the
most severe requirements of that industry. The following list outlines the major areas,
which were examined in this test program.
Mechanical Strength
Environmental
Electrical performance
The cable is installed with one cable at each end. The axial fore 1000N is applied
on the cable using the INSTRON tensile machine. The tensile machine is move with the
speed of 1CM/min along the cable axial direction. While the tensile strength reaches
1000N, hold the force for 1 minute.
Before the test, all the closures are pressurized up to 60 KPa and after the test,
check the closure for the pressure, and observe the appearance of the closures.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no deform in the
Appearance and damage in the closure. The cables ate entrance have no
Displacement and loosening.

Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no mechanical deform
and damage in the appearance and breakage in the closure.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no mechanical deform,
damage and crack in the appearance and breakage in the closure.
All the closures are pressurized to 60 KPa, and then, bend the cable with a radius
of 150mm at the entrance of the closure to +/- 45 degrees as a bending cycle. Repeat 10
cycles.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage. The cables at entrance
have no displacement and loosening.
All the closures are pressurized to 60 KPa, and then, apply the torsion force to the
cable at a distance of 1M from the closure entrance, the torsion force enable the cable to
twist +/-90 degree as a testing cycle, total 10 cycles tested.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage. The cables at entrance
have no displacement and loosening.

3.1.6 Vibration Test
Before the test, the closure is pressurized to 60 KPa, the closure is fixed onto the
vibration table. The vibration frequency is 10 - 55 Hz, the amplitude is +/-3mm, and total
vibration duration is 10 minutes.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no mechanical deform,
damage and crack in the appearance and breakage in the closure.
The 2179-C Fiber Optic Splice Cases were subjected to a series of environmental
tests in order to determine the ability of the splice case to withstand worst-case
environmental conditions that may be experienced in outside plant.
Before the test, all 2179-C closures are pressurized to 40 KPa. And then put into a
aging chamber. The temperature is set up as the following: stay at +20℃ for 2 hours,
and drop down to -40℃ and stay for 2 hours, and high to +60℃ and stay for 2 hours.
Repeat the cycle total 10 times.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no damage and crack in
the appearance and breakage in the closure.
All closures are pressurized to 100KPa, and then put into an aging chamber. The
chamber temperature is set up -40℃~ +60℃ as a cycle. The test will hold for 2 cycles.
Result: After subjected to the above test, there is no air leakage, no damage and crack in
the appearance and breakage in the closure.

Before the test, the closures are pressurized to 40 KPa, and submerged into the
water at a waterhead of 2 meters, after 6 days, take out the closure and check the
closure pressure and the appearance.
Assemble the closure with the capillary gas supply lines instead of cable, and then
submerge the closure into water with the temperature of 60℃first, connect the dry
nitrogen source directly to the hygrometer. And obtain a steady-state value of the
moisture content r1 at the flow rate of 500ml/min. Secondary, re-direct the gas through
the closure and obtain a steady-state value of the moisture content r2 of the gas flowing
through the closure at the rate of 500ml/min. The difference in moisture content between
the incoming gas r1 and the outgoing gas r2 is then translated into a moisture
permeation rate.

Soaking the closures in the water for 24 hours and then connect the entire metallic
element together. Measure the insulation resistance between the metallic element and
the earth. The test voltage is 500 VDC.

Soaking the closures in the water for 24 hours and then connect all the metallic
element together. Test the dielectric strength between the metallic element and the earth.
The test voltage is 15K VDC; the voltage is applied for 2 minutes.

4.0 Conclusions
The 2179-C splice cases were examined through a variety of tests that cover the
products ability to protect the fiber cable splice. Throughout the tests, the 2179-C splice
case met the severe requirements and performed with excellent results. After all the
tests above, There are no attenuation variation for optic fiber at the wavelength of
1310nm and 1550nm when the fiber is lopped in the fiber-cassette within the length of
more than 3.2 meters.
