Insulation Resistance and Earthing
Insulation Resistance and Earthing
Insulation Resistance and Earthing
AIM:
THEORY:
If an installation is to be free from excessive leakage current, then the insulation around the
conductors should be round i.e. the insulation must offer a very high resistance to the passage of any current.
He valves expected are so high that they are measured to mega ohms.
The main aim of this test is to know whether the wires or cables used in wiring systems are
sufficiently insulated to avoid leakage of current. Test is performed on DC volts not less than twice of
working voltage. But not exceeding 500v. A 500v tests known as megger is used for this purpose.
AIM:
To study about electrical wire types, wire diagrams, fuses and earthing.
PURPOSE OF SHEATH:
It is to protect the insulation from damage and injury. It is not classed as insulation.
Sheath materials are required to be heat, oil and chemical resistant and flame retardant. The
sheath must also be tough and flexible.
1. Polyvinyl chloride.
2. Neoprene
3. CSP – hypalon
4. Silicone rubber
5. Lead

6. Copper
7. Neoprene is a common sheath method material, but CSP HOFR sheathing is well suited for
shipboard use.
8. It offers resistance to cuts abrasions weather and ozone and also it is flexible.
ARMOURING:
Extra mechanical protection is provided by armouring with woven wire raid of galvanised steel,
tinned phosphor bronze.
The wire braiding also acts as a screen for reduce interference caused by magnetic fields in
communication and instrumental circuits.
Owing to magnetic properties steel armouring is unsuitable for single core cables carrying heavy
alternating cable current.
A protective outer sheath of CSP or neoprene over the wire braid.
Testing of continuity and insulation resistance testing of AC and DC machines.
IMPORTANCE OF EARTHING:
Loose internal wire of any equipment weak insulation or damaged insulation will have contact with
the frame of the apparatus that causes the apparatus live with the main voltage and is dangerous to
the operator.
By earthing the apparatus to the ship’s hull will eliminate hazard to personal or operator.
