LABORATORY REPORT

BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES: WATER AND CARBON

1. OBJECTIVES

- GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Determine the flow of matter and energy in the carbon and
water cycles with simple experiments.

- SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
o Differentiate between the decomposition of biodegradable and non-biodegradable
materials.
o Identify the problems of increasing non-biodegradable materials in ecosystems.
o Reflect on the importance of the water cycle and all the actors in this process.
o Propose solutions regarding the waste of current water.

2. METHODOLOGY

 Carbon cycle experiment:

 In your house you will bury organic material (fruit peel, vegetable stalks, potato
peel) and inorganic material (a plastic bag). Do this from April 14, then check April
17, then on April 22.
 Take photos of the result

 Water cycle experiment:

 Place a small glass in a large plastic bowl. Add cold water to the bowl to cover
approximately three-quarters of the glass. The inside of the glass must remain dry.
 Add vegetable coloring to the water in the bowl. (If you don't have this, continue to
the next step.)
 Add a cup of dry soil to the water and stir until cloudy.
 Tightly cover the bowl with a piece of plastic, securing it with a rubber or similar.
 Put a stone small or a coin on the plastic on top of the glass.
 Place the bowl in the sun for at least 30 min or some days. Look at the water that
has collected in the glass.
 Take pictures of the model and the result in the glass of water.
NOTE: you can check this experiment in complementary resources: water cycle
object.

3. RESULTS:

 Then after checking the state of both materials (organic and inorganic), make a
detailed description of the state of these objects and put the photos.
 For the second experiment do too a detailed description of the water that was
obtained in the glass and put your photos.
NOTE: Do this description and paste the pictures organized in charts, as the
example.
Example:

Description First experiment Pictures

Description Second experiment Pictures

4. RESULTS’ ANALYSIS

For the analysis answer the following questions:

 First experiment:
 FOR ORGANIC MATERIAL:
 How are the shells that were deposited three days ago?
 Why do you think the shells that were deposited are decomposed?
 What living things are observed when digging up organic matter?
 How do these living things help in the nutrients of the soil?
 What do decomposed organic beings contribute to the atmosphere?

 FOR INORGANIC MATERIAL

 How do you see the plastic objects that were left buried?
 Why are they not decomposed, like organic matter?
 Do these plastic objects contaminate the ground, yes, no, why?

 Second experiment:
 What processes allowed water to accumulate in the glass?
 Why is the water in the glass not muddy?
 Why is it important to take care of the water reservoirs and not to contaminate it?
 How do the moors in Colombia help us with the water resource?
 What is the best help we can provide from our homes for water care?

5. CONCLUSIONS

 Create 4 conclusions based on the specific objectives that has this laboratory.
