III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Motivation
Have you ever experienced cooking at home? To whom does this household task usually given to?
Is it always the girls’ responsibility? Does the work being demanded always for them? When you are tasked
to do it, what do you usually cook? Do you follow a set of procedure in making it?

Let us see how well you can recall your cooking experiences through Picture Strip Puzzle. Below the
arms of your chairs are strips of pictures of food that are usually being prepared at home. You are to
complete the puzzle by putting the strips that fit together which will at the same time determine your group
members. After completing the puzzle, discuss among yourselves the procedure on how to cook it and be
able to list them in order.
(See Appendix A for the pictures)
Are you done?
Yes, ma’am.
Kindly choose a representative in your group to
share your recipe in front.
(The representatives will present their output.)
Very good.
B. Presentation
Now, let us also learn another recipe through the
poem “How to Sauté a Husband Who Berates His
Wife Who Doesn’t Know How to Cook” by Corazon
Almerino.

C. Lesson Proper
Task 1: Vocabulary Bingo
Before we read the poem, let us first identify the meanings of the difficult words found in the poem
through a Vocabulary Bingo. Instead of numbers, words are put in each bingo grid and you are going to
locate the word that matches the definition that I will give. Encircle it and orally use the word in a sentence.

Under B: It is a slander or evil talk about somebody.

Answer: malediction
Under I: It means to completely put something into a liquid.
Answer: immerse
Under N: It means to make a hole through something with a sharp pointed object.
Answer: pierce
Under G: It means to add flavorings such as herbs or spices to food.
Answer: season
Under O: It means to cook food quickly and lightly in a little butter, oil, or fat.
Answer: sauté
(See Appendix B for the Vocabulary Bingo Card)
Excellent. I know you are now ready to read the
text.
Task 2: Oral Reading of the Text
Since there are only 11 lines in the poem, let us orally read it. As you read, please take note of the
uncommon ingredients and closely examine the procedure.
(See Appendix C for the copy of the literary piece)
Did you understand the poem?
Not so well ma’am.
Now, I’ll give you time to brainstorm in your group
about the literary piece. Afterwards, we shall have a
game for reading comprehension check.
Task 3: Roll-A-Dice Game
Let us find out how well you have understood the poem through your visual imagination. The number
that appears on top of the dice after it is rolled will be the group number who will answer the question.
Hence, follow up questions may be given. When answering, you are not allowed to open your notes.
* Note: No number should be repeated to give all groups equal chances to answer.
1. What are the ingredients being used?
Oil
Onions
Garlic
fists that he will punch your face with
feet that he will kick you with
other parts of the body
curses and maledictions
Very good. Do you think all the ingredients are
usually used when cooking?
No, ma’am
Why do you say so?
The meat is not either pork nor chicken, nor beef.
Instead, it is a meat of human.
Correct. It is also specified like the fists that he will
punch your face with, and the feet that he will kick
you with.
Anymore?
The seasonings too are not spices or herbs;
instead, they are curses and maledictions.
Yes, that’s right and we’ll find out later on why.
(The teacher will roll the dice again.)

2. What are the steps in sautéing a food?

1. Heat oil in a frying pan.
2. Sauté onions and garlic.
3. Immerse the fists that he will punch your face
with.
4. Do likewise with the feet that he will kick you with.
5. Mix in the other parts of his body.
6. Bring to a boil.
7. Pierce with fork.
8. Season with curses and maledictions.
Correct. What did you notice in the procedures?
The steps are the usual the steps in sautéing a
food. However, like what the other group has said,
the ingredients used are uncommon.
Yes, somewhat unique, right?
(The teacher will roll the dice again.) Yes, ma’am.

3. From the title itself, why is the husband used as

the main ingredient?
I think the husband is used as the main ingredient
because probably of annoyance of being berated by
the husband.
Very good. Do you also have the same feeling if you
are in the situation of the wife?
Yes, ma’am.
Why?
They say wives must be submissive to husbands
but if I am in the situation, I would also be angry
because wives are not only the ones who are
responsible for cooking dishes. Hence, being
berated by a husband is really quite annoying.
Yes, that’s it. (The teacher will roll the dice again.)

4. What situation of the couple is implied in the text?

The situation of the couple implied in the text is
having a conflict.
Yes, that’s right, but what made you think of that
situation?
The tone is bitter and angry and based on the text
itself, the wife is perhaps being annoyed with how
the husband treats her.
Correct. They are in conflict. (The teacher will roll
the dice again.)

5. How can you relate the procedure of making the

sautéed dish to the way an inferior wife avenges his
haughty husband?
In the procedure, the body parts of the husband is
being immersed and brought to a boil and seasoned
with curses and maledictions. Now, in relation to
reality, an inferior wife avenges his haughty
husband through cursing him and wanting him to die
and be cooked harshly.
Yes. It sounds brutal, but sometimes that’s the
reality. (The teacher will roll the dice again.)

6. If you were a wife, how would you insist your right

for equality to your husband?
If I were a wife, I would not let my husband berate
me just because of simple things. So, to insist my
right for equality, I would tell him that what he is
doing is against my right as a wife. I would tell him
that he must not be superior; instead, he must be
fair and equal. If for instance, I cannot do a certain
thing which he can do, then probably, he can just
volunteer to do it. Likewise, I will do the things he
fails to do to attain equality. Actually, in reality, it is
really hard to attain such but it is just a matter of
explaining in a kind manner to let him understand
the situation and your right as well.
Well said. That’s also one thing that we should learn
—to manage things gently.

Now, having understood the story, I want you to

know that the poem we have just read is a feminist
literature. It is a fiction or non-fiction type of literature
that supports the feminist goals of defining,
establishing, and defending equal rights for women.
Hence, it sustains the idea that we can all be equal
regardless of our gender.

I have here a graphic organizer to show you the

characteristics of a feminist literature.
(See Appendix D for the graphic organizer)
Task 4: OREO Writing Activity
Re-read the poem silently. Find out if the characteristics shown in the given graphic organizer that
are manifested in the literary piece. Use the OREO graphic writing organizer to show your observations.
(See Appendix E for the worksheet)
Are you done?
Yes, ma’am.
Kindly pass the worksheets in front.
Now that you have understood the situation of
women in a patriarchal system, it is your opportunity
to make a change. Consider the plea of women for
equality of rights.
Task 5: Column Writing Activity
Heterogeneously group yourselves into five according to gender. Make a column article that
discusses the elimination of gender stereotypes within a patriarchal society. Publish them in your blog site.
(See Appendix F for the criteria)
IV. Generalization

today?
I have learned what a feminist literature is and from
it, I learned how to value the rights of women.
I have learned how to identify feminist literature
through its characteristics.

our gender, and so, there is really a must to
eliminate gender stereotypes.
